“Here's your change,” The taxi driver gruffly said, handing her some money.

“Thank you sir.”

Zelah Cooper swung one jean-clad leg out of the taxi that dropped her  at 14th street, Sinkor and the other followed.

She walked through the gates that fenced the Royal Grand Hotel. Her kinky hair was plaited at the front and held in a messy bun at  the back of her head.

Her jeans, folded on top of her converse, flapped a little as she climbed the steps and pushed the door open. They weren't skintight and she wore a yellow crop-top with a jean jacket to complete the look.

The air conditioning enveloped her and she let out a sigh, free of the blasting heat outside for a while.

She went past the restaurant, walked down the hallway and knocked at the door of the office she was interviewed in a week ago.

She had applied two weeks ago to be one of their chefs of the restaurant. Cooking has always been her favorite hobby.

And she made sure to extend her knowledge outside of the local borders.

She obtained her knowledge from her cooking classes at  Mary Klah Culinary school and online classes from different international schools.

Zelah came highly recommended from her instructors and the management at the hotel took interest in her.

“Come in.” The deep, sultry voice came through the door.

She felt the cold air hit her as she entered into the office and met the handsome manager that had interviewed her.

She stole a glance at the powering air conditioning and her lips curled up at the wisps of air that was coming out.
She clenched her fists by her side and smiled-grimaced, turning her attention to the man in front of her.

It was ten o’clock in the morning, but he was already ruffled and rumbled up. His tie was off and his crinkling eyes were weary.

“Good morning Zelah," he said with a smile. "Please have a seat.”

He removed the papers from the front of his desk and she sat down consciously.

“Here is your temporary employment letter. Welcome to the team,” He slid a paper across to her and gave a half-smile.

“Thank you so much Amine. I'm glad to be here.” She said with a small smile.

“You're welcome. You still have two months to train under one of our top chefs so we see what you are capable of. But I'm sure you can handle it.”

“I'll definitely do my best.”

He nodded and pulled a clear plastic containing white clothing from under his desk and handed it to her.  “You can start right away as you requested. At the end of the day, if you have the time, I would like to hear about your first day. Those are your uniforms.”

The crinkling plastic emulated little noises that warmed her heart. It felt like the first wrapped gift you take from under the Christmas tree early Christmas morning.

This is really happening.

“Thank you again. I'm really excited for this.”

There was a knock once on the door and it opened.

A young woman stepped in and stood at the side of the door. She glanced at Zelah, then at Amine and then she lowered her gaze.

“Zelah, this is Michaela. She's the head waitress here. I asked her to take you to the kitchens so you can meet Chef Holden and get started.”
