Old Friend

"How's to going with learning that spell from Remus?" Jamie asked as she and Harry walked towards the courtyard.   They were on their way to meet up with Ron and Hermione to go and find out how Hagrid's hearing went. 

"It's going well I think, I've almost learned how to do the spell properly.  Are you sure you don't want to come and learn it with me?"

Jamie shook her head, "I already know how to do it, remember?"

"Right.  I forgot Jamie Black is one of the brightest wizards of our age who is capable of learning almost any spell," Harry teased.  Jamie laughed.

"I think Hermione still has me beat for the top student though," 

They entered the courtyard and found Ron and Hermione standing near the center, both looking particularly annoyed.  

"Beautiful day," Hermione spoke as Jamie and Harry joined them. 

"Gorgeous," Ron snapped.  "Unless of course you've been ripped to pieces!"

"Ripped to pieces? What are you talking about?" Harry asked. 

"Ronald has lost his rat," Hermione huffed.

"I haven't lost anything! Your cat killed him!"

"Rubbish!"

"Jamie, you've seen how that bloodthirsty beast is always lurking around.  And now Scabbers is gone!"

"Don't bring me into this!" Jamie exclaimed.  "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see how Hagrid is doing, but if you want to continue your silly squabble then be my guest."

Jamie walked away with Harry at her side.  Ron and Hermione followed, making snarky comments to one another, keeping their voices low so Jamie couldn't hear them.

"How'd it go Hagrid? The hearing," Hermione asked.  They all stood on the bank of the pond.  Harry was in the water up to his knees with his trousers rolled up skipping stones.  

Hagrid skipped another stone, "Well, first off, the committee took turns talkin' about why we were there.  And then I got up and me pice.   Said how Buckbeak was a good Hippogriff.  Always cleaned his feathers.  And then, Lucious Malfoy got up.  And you can imagine..." Hagrid sighed and threw another rock.  "He said Buckbeak was a deadly and dangerous creature who would kill ya as soon as he looked at ya. "

"And then?" Jamie pressed.

"And then, he asked for the worst he did old Lucious,"

"They're not sacking you!" Ron groaned. 

Hagrid shook his head, "No, I'm not sacked... Buckbeak's been sentenced to death!"  Hagrid chucked his stone into the water making a big splash.  The students stood on the edge of the water, not sure how to comfort their friend.

Jamie sat at breakfast, poking at her eggs.  She was dreading the Divination class she had and was thinking about the full moon next week.  Jamie was concerned she may not be able to control her new abilities while in an immense amount of pain.   She looked up as Harry took the seat next to her, looking just was gloomy.  

"What's the matter with you?"

"I got caught with the map and Professor Lupin confiscated it," he grumbled.  

"What! How did you- Why would you-"

"I saw someone on the map, someone we know to be dead, so I went looking for them.  I couldn't find them and then I got caught.  I guess that map doesn't always work," Harry explained.
