"Hello," I said into my phone.

"Hello," cooed the voice of an older woman.

     "Um, is this Macie's phone?"

"I can be whoever you want me to be," replied the elderly woman seductively. I froze.

Oh God, that's insanely creepy. My fingers stumbled around to end the call. I wasn't having much luck with the yearbook numbers. Macie, the hot bookworm from highschool, was my fifth call of the day, and it clearly wasn't her. I looked back down to the open yearbook on my lap.

There was one last phone number left to call, Sage, the awkward, unattractive girl I briefly dated in my junior year. She broke up with me surprisingly, something about her being too out of my league.

   ~*~

     "Adam who?"

"Adam James, we dated during our junior year."

"The guy with the creepy peach fuzz?" I slammed my hand against my face.

"Yes, the kid with the peach fuzz." I heard a crackling and another voice on the other line. Yelling over it, I said, "I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime."

"Um, my boyfriend and I are doing something tonight but any other time would work."

Boyfriend? BOYFRIEND? Sage has a boyfriend? Maybe I could kill him... That sounds good... I have my grandpa's shotg- I broke up my thought, No killing, I can't kill someone.

"Oh, well, sorry to bother you, I'll be going."

"Okay bye." I heard the disconnecting beep, then the drone of nothingness.

There I sat, on a crappy bed, in an old apartment building, with a phone to my ear, and no idea of what I was going to do. I dropped my phone onto my bed, my eyes wide.

"I'm going to fail my dad and die alone," I murmured to myself. "Die alone." When I thought my situation couldn't get worse, my phone rang. It's ringtone for this specific person was the most annoying I could find, for the most annoying person I know. That person was my brother Eric.

Don't answer it Adam! I told myself, but my body said otherwise. I answered it. Unfortunately.

"Adam!" I pulled my phone from ear to avoid damage. "I'm pissed right now."

     "Why are you pissed Eric?"

"I heard from one of Dad's co-workers that you were inheriting the company!" I could almost see Eric stomping on the ground like a four year old during a pixi stick induced tantrum. "I always wanted it!"

"Don't be mad at me, it was Dad's idea."

"Yes, but you agreed to it!"

"You do know I suggested that you take it over but Dad didn't want YOU running it!" Before he could make another snooty comment, I disconnected myself from him. I couldn't take another rant from Prince Eric.

Eric got the looks out of the two of us. We looked like opposites with his dark hair and bright eyes. He was a spoiled brat turned annoying adult. I'm still not allowed to see his son.

Our rivalrous roots run all the way to my birth. He was demoted from being an only child to having someone to share the spotlight with, even though he still got most of the attention. I'd tried to make peace but he always wants war.

I collapsed onto my bed. I was stuck. I had no other options. It didn't look like I'd be marrying anyone any time soon.

   ~*~

I'd been sitting motionlessly on my bed for about an hour when I heard a knock on the door. I stumbled off the bed and strutted to the door. I immediately straightened up when I saw it was Mya.

     "Hi Mya."

"Hi Adam, my mom wanted me to hangout with someone but I'll my friends were busy. I saw your girlfriend leave so I assumed you weren't doing anything."

"No I'm not doing anything. What'd you have in mind?" I leaned against the doorway.

Looking to the ground, Mya said, "I don't know, I was hoping you'd have ideas." She looked up to me. "Sorry if I'm bothering you."

"Oh no you're not bothering me." I fiddled with the lint in my pocket. "We could go to the park." Her eyes glistened.

"The park?" Her tone seemed excited yet confused.

"Um, but if you don't want to..."

"No. The park's fine." She grinned.

"What're you majoring in?" I asked, my scarf's end spinning and twisting in the chilly breeze.

"I want to teach." Mya repositioned herself on the bench. "I like working with kids."

"Oh, what're you doing tomorrow?" I looked down at her chapped face.

"I don't know yet. Are you going to do something with your girlfriend?" Mya looked to me.

"Um, no. Well, maybe. We kind of had some trouble today." I sighed, looking out at the motionless river.

     "Oh. I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Are you dating anyone right now?"

"Yeah, I am." Mya's light brown hair whipped around at the sudden gust of wind. "But he's been kind of vague lately."

"Oh. Sharon's kind of crazy." I laughed. "She's not even really my girlfriend. She just said that."

There was a brief awkward silence. Then Mya spoke.

"Do you want to go on the swings?" I looked at her expecting to see a joking face, but there wasn't one. She was completely serious. And honestly, I was glad she was serious.

   ~*~

If I had to count how many times I laughed like a little boy that day, I couldn't tell you. There was too many thanks to Mya. I felt ridiculous playing on swings at twenty-five years old, but it didn't change a thing.

I never really thought of her as the person that would willingly climb a jungle gym. Nor did I think that I would happily fling myself across monkey bars.

Fun is fun. It doesn't matter how you had it or who you are, as long as you enjoyed every second of it.
