~Chapter Five~

I arrived at Carrington Enterprises the next morning at 6:30 am, as per the request of my boss. My nose followed a delicious scent, all the way into The Accounting Department. Before me stood Shayne Carrington with a platter of pastries, fresh baked bagels of all varieties, a large selection of cream cheese spreads, butter, jams, and jellies.

"Good morning Sabine, help yourself. I ordered bagels, and coffee for everyone this morning from Panera Bread." He had a twinkle in his striking eyes.

I motioned to this tantalizing spread, "That was very thoughtful of you. I didn't get to eat breakfast. So, my stomach and taste buds thank you."

"No thanks needed. In-spite of what you may think of me, I often do thoughtful things for people. Especially, those that I care about." He let those words hang in the air, as he scooted past me, grabbing a cup of coffee.

He poured cream and sugar into his coffee cup, with his back turned to me, "Whenever you're ready, you can meet me in my office." He turned and didn't say another word.

That was best, because I didn't know what else to say at the moment.

I made a cup of coffee. Then, grabbed a plain bagel, with a hazelnut cream cheese spread and headed into Shayne's office. My chair was empty of folders and he had cleared a spot on his desk, for me to work at with him.

"Ah, Sabine, have a seat. Finish your breakfast, and then we can start. I redid the numbers last night after you left, and something is a little off. I need you to redo them if you don't mind? We're losing insane amounts of money each week. At this rate, we'll be bankrupt in a year." He steepled his hands, as he was in deep thought.

I tried to chew very quietly, but it was just the two of us in the room. I was self conscious of the noise, "I don't mind redoing the numbers. I can start now, I've eaten enough." I reached for the folders.

"Did your mystery date mind me calling last night?" He inquired without blinking an eye.

"His name is, Skyler Pennington. No he didn't mind." I refused to tell him anything more. He already knew too much.

"Interesting name, that name suits a guy that would date you." He chuckled under his breath.

"What is that supposed to mean?" He was getting my dander up.

"You can figure that out for yourself." He eyed me, with a mischievous grin.

Oh, so now it's tit for tat. He's getting me back for what I said about his office. I'm going to pretend he's not here, and keep working.

His cellphone rang, "Good morning, Astrid. You're not disturbing me at all. I still have to figure out what time we can go to dinner, tonight. I have a lot of work ahead of me. It might be tomorrow night, but I'll definitely let you know. I'll talk to you soon. Bye."

Shayne is taking Astrid, out to dinner? What is that all about? Not that I care.

"May I ask you for a suggestion, on where I could take Astrid for a nice date?" Shayne actually asked for my opinion? I was dumbfounded.

"I didn't know you and Astrid were dating. I know she's very shy, and you're you, that's the only reason I'm surprised." I had to try to cleanup the insult, I just gave him.
