Chapter 1

The rattling started again.

Groaning, I listened to the rattling that was occurring above my apartment. My back was aching, the papers on my desk were crinkled, and my glasses were skewed on my face. That's what I get for falling asleep at the desk. Cleaning off my glasses, the rattle only got louder and much more annoying. It had been this way ever since I signed the lease in August. Suddenly, randomly, the floor above me would shake and make horrible noises. The neighbors, the landlord, none of us could figure out where the damn noise was coming from. Looking back down at my notes, I muttered, "This is unbelievable."

It really was. I picked this place because I was told that it would be better than living on campus. While the rooms were nice and the landlord pleasant, this noise grated on my nerves. It made studying a million times harder and even music didn't tune it out. Tapping my pencil against my notebook, I finally threw it down when a loud-bone-aching hum started up as well. I should have gone to study at the library.

"This is ridiculous," I said angrily. Shoving my computer chair back, I walked over to the door and grabbed a flashlight off the table.

Wandering out into the hallway, I made my way towards the end of the hallway. The stairwell door was unlocked, which wasn't unusual. But just before I made my way up the stairs, I heard a brittle voice call out to me.

"Mr. Sharrow? What are you doing?"

I turned around and saw Mrs. Anderson standing by the door of her apartment. Her gray hair was pulled up into a bun and her dressing gown was tied tightly around her. She had a small frown, her spectacles sitting on the tip of her nose. She looked like a stern old lady but in reality... well she was still a stern old lady. But she was one with her heart in the right place.

"Mrs. Anderson," I said, pointing his flashlight towards the ceiling, "I was trying to study when that started happening again. I want to see if I can find out once and for all where it's coming from."

"Are you sure?" Mrs. Anderson asked, her voice concerned, "Why don't you wait until Eric comes home? He could go up with you."

Officer Eric Anderson was a police officer. He was tall, built as strong as an ox, and a good person to wait around for to help investigate shady situations. But I needed to finish this research for my project and was not going to wait a couple more hours to do so.

"Thanks, but I want to try and find it while we can still hear it," I said, "Have a good night."

"I will if you can get that noise to stop."

Smiling at her, I wandered up the stairs towards the fourth floor.

In hindsight, I really should have waiting for Officer Anderson to come home. The fourth floor was definitely the creepy top floor that no one wanted to go to. No one lived up here either. Only about a fourth of the hallway lights worked and there were only three apartments on the right side of the hallway. The windows on the left had old mothy curtains that low-keyed smelled.

The rattling and humming seemed to be coming from the apartment on the farthest end. The apartment had to be the strangest one too. The door frame was worn around the edges and there were scratch marks all over it. It was sketchy. I don't know why I didn't wait for someone else to come up with me.

I should have.

Just as I was about to open the door, the humming stopped.

The rattling stopped.

The lights went off.

It was so quiet I could hear a pin being dropped.

"Weird," I muttered.

The door flung up, lights flashing in my face as I felt myself being sucked into the doorway. I couldn't even scream because I felt like the air was being sucked from my lungs. It left my lungs feeling cold, cold as ice. I finally lost all footing as I was tossed into a void where smoke and shadows were the constant. There were cries all around me of others that I could not fully see. But there was one laughter that could be heard over everything else. It made my bones feel like they were withering and my stomach churn violently.

I couldn't take anymore as I finally blacked out completely.
