Lennon had been pretty quiet

Lennon had been pretty quiet. The talk about Bradley must have been getting to her. I had to admit, hearing his name all over the school was driving me crazy, even if I was happy he was arrested. I couldn’t imagine how hard it was for her.

It was seventh period, the second last of the day. I was sitting at a table with Zach, Ivy and Kevin, trying to work on the group assignment but they weren’t in the mood to focus. Zach wouldn’t shut up about how the school felt empty without Bradley. My hands were clenched into fists. I was fighting the urge to tell him off and how the school was better off without him. Lennon wouldn’t be very happy with me if I told.

“Okay so what do you think the truth is? I’m still thinking drugs but-”

“Just shut up about Bradley alright?” I cut him off and grabbed my stuff, walking out of class.

“What crawled up his ass and died?” I heard Zach mutter. I shook my head and just kept going.

“Rowan Taylors, where do you think you’re going?” My teacher, Mrs. Peters tried to stop me.

“The washroom.” I told her.

“Alright, just ask next time.” She huffed, shooing me off. I walked into the hallway, heading towards my locker. I wasn’t one to skip class but I couldn’t deal with everyone’s comments. I’m going to wait in my jeep until the end of the day. I convinced myself that would be okay. I threw on my jacket so I didn’t have to carry it anymore and stopped in front of my locker.

I was in the hallway alone. The quiet was nice, compared to the rumors that were floating around in the classroom. I couldn’t help but wonder what was true. Did Officer Stone finally get his search warrant? Was Bradley finally going to get what was coming to him? I didn’t get my combination on the first try, so I had to do it again. Frustrated, I heard the click and I shoved my books into my locker, hearing a loud thump as they fell to the bottom.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Lennon’s name came across the screen with a brief text.

My Mom is picking me up after school.

I could tell something was wrong, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I quickly texted her back.

What’s going on?

Someone passed me and I looked up to see Lennon. She was in her own world, not even paying attention. “Lennon.” I said, but it was like she couldn’t hear me. Something was definitely wrong. I ran after her. “Lennon!” I grabbed her shoulders. She was startled and as white as a ghost. “It’s me, it’s me.”

“Rowan…” She was shaking as I took her hands in mine.

“What’s wrong?” I asked her, quietly and pulled her into an empty classroom across the hall. “Why is your Mom picking you up after school?”
