"Go back to my dorm. Try and figure out what a monster means to you."

"What it means to me?"

"It is your class. You must be looking for what a monster means to you."

"I've already said there is no right or wrong answer. Just support your claim as best you can."

"What does a monster mean to you then?" Elijah inched closer to me and I found myself leaning in.

"Do you think I'm a monster, Maya?"

"Of course."

"Do you think my brother is a monster?"

"More or less."

"What's the difference between us?" He questioned softly. I looked into his icy eyes. They were a soft blue right now. They welcomed me with warmth.

"Your personalities."

"How am I a monster Maya?"

"You kill, obviously," I whispered in a hushed voice. "You deceive people and make them believe something that was fake." He nodded accepting my answer.

"What about Neil?"

"What about him?"

"Are you ever alone with your thoughts and simply compare us?"

"At times."

"Do you ever wonder if he's compelled you? There's no possible way for you to know but have you ever thought about it?"

"At times I think everything in my life is some fictional world you and him created for me. Other times I don't care if you did."

"That's an interesting thought." He mused quietly. "Doesn't that scare you?"

"Immensely." He leaned away from me and it was just then that I realized how close we were.

"Can I ask you something personal, Maya?" I gave him the approval and waited. "If you were in my position would you do anything differently?"

"Yes."

"Amuse me."

"I wouldn't make you fall in love with me."

"Do you mean if I were the human?"

"Yes." I confirmed smoothing out my dress.

"Are you saying that you love me?"

I stood up and held my hand out to him. He graciously accepted it and we walked around hand in hand pretending to look at the art. "Do you have plans after this?"

"I'm afraid I don't."

"I was thinking about getting a drink after this. It's been a day."

"Is than an invitation?"

"If you'd like." I don't know where this confidence came from. The sophisticated environment I was surrounded by got the best of me.

Elijah and I stopped at one of the pieces in the corner of the room. It was more dim and surrounded with less lingering people. I released his hand to check my ringing phone and watched as he stuffed it in his slacks. "Give me a second." I mumbled stepping away from him. "Don't do that vampire thing."

"You mean listen?"

I waved my hand dismissively and pressed accept on the call. "Hey, Mom." I chewed on my lip as a habit and waited as her voice flooded my ears.

"Hey honey," I could just picture the smile painted on her face and it caused one of my own "I was just calling to check up on you. It's been so long."
