"Any thoughts so far?" Lex asked, sitting back in her desk chair and shooting Rolf a look where he sat in the one next to her.
When Rolf had moved into the room, they'd replaced Lex's old desk with a new one with enough room for the both of them to sit at it. Over the past week, since they'd inherited the stack of manila folders from America, they'd been reviewing them and comparing notes. Rolf looked up from the case he'd been studying as Lex finished speaking and met her eyes with a thoughtful look.
"Hard to know what to think," he said as he closed the cover, resting his hand on the top. "I mean, a few of these things sound like actual crimes have been committed, but some just sound strange, like fairy tales that have come to life."
Lex frowned, her fingers tracing patterns on the top of the folders on her desk. There had been over two dozen cases in all, most of which the both of them had read by now, and she felt as confused about them as Rolf sounded.
"Yes, and some of those don't even seem like anything happened that would put law enforcement on the case. I mean, strange lights in a swamp? Isn't that just swamp gas? Or meat disappearing from storehouses? Isn't that something that could happen in the wild anywhere, where an animal might break in and eat it?"
Rolf gave her a sideways glance and a smile and she figured he'd realized her case reference was from the one he'd spent a lot of time reviewing – the one about the "wolfman" in Maine. "How about the one with the lady in white who supposedly enchants children?"
Shooting him a surprised look, Lex couldn't help a grin of her own at his return volley. "Well, that's different. Children disappearing would actually be a crime."
"That's assuming that the woman they're describing is even connected with the children's disappearance," Rolf pointed out with a shrug. "Just because people say that she spirited them away doesn't mean it happened that way. Of course, once you start to doubt that, it's easy to wonder if there's a lady at all. It seems to warrant more investigation."
"They all do," Lex replied with a sigh. "Even the ones that seem to be odd sightings, but that doesn't mean that we have to do it. I don't understand why they've come to us over anyone else with these things; they're mysterious, sure, and some of them even sound dangerous or criminal, but they must have someone there that can handle them."
The look Rolf gave her in response seemed much darker. "I'd have to agree with that. I'm sure this isn't the whole reason they want the group of you there."
"I don't think we'd be able to convince most of the group to go back, anyway," Lex continued, shaking her head. "We might be able to get a few who would go, but not enough to be able to do anything about all of these cases they want us to chase down."
Rolf leaned over to kiss her as he turned off the lamp on his side of the desk. "Let's not worry about it any more tonight. We can start talking about them with everyone over the weekend, but I think you're right, hearing what's out there isn't likely to change anyone's mind about going back."
With a nod of agreement, Lex pulled her fleece bathrobe closer around her before getting up from the desk to cross to her side of the bed. As Rolf turned off the bedside lamp, she shed her dressing gown and hurried into bed, shivering at the chill. The snowy weather had given way to wind and lower temperatures, so the fluffy comforter she huddled underneath with Rolf felt most welcoming. She sighed as she settled in, however, her thoughts still stuck with what she'd been reading earlier.
"What do you think their next move will be?" she murmured as she and Rolf cuddled close against the cold.
"Sleep." She felt the syllable rumble through his chest where she'd put her arm around him. "Think about it tomorrow."
