After taking pictures of the sunset, they packed their things and were in the car, heading back. It was starting to get dark.
An hour or so into the ride, they started hearing weird noises, when the car engine suddenly died. Making them stranded on a long empty road, with nothing but trees and more trees on each side.
"Great!" Junhoe tightly gripped the steering wheel, trying to calm himself. He took a deep breath and exhaled through his mouth, as he leaned his head on the wheel.
"So what do we do, now?" Jinhwan asked.
"I'll have to check the engine. See what's wrong" junhoe turned to face jinhwan. "Don't worry, I know a thing or two about cars" he tried to reassure jinhwan when he saw the worried look on his face.
Jinhwan got out, following behind Junhoe, even though he knew nothing about cars, just so he didn't seem useless.
Junhoe checked his pockets to search for his phone but it wasn't there. "Can i use your phone for a bit?"
Jinhwan fished out his phone from his pocket and handed it to junhoe.
Turning on the flashlight from the phone, junhoe opened the hood and shone the light on it. He took a few moments to look around.
He had no idea what was going on. But his pride wouldn't let him show that to jinhwan, so he continued to inspect the engine, pretending to see what was wrong.
"I think there's something wrong with the engine"
Jinhwan raised an eyebrow. "Well, yeah. We both know that"
Junhoe took a quick glance at him, and turned back to the car.
"Are you sure you know what you're doin-"
"Yeah, I know what I'm doing! Just...just take this and shine some light over here" junhoe handed jinhwan his phone back.
Jinhwan held his phone with the flashlight on, when the battery died.
Jinhwan puffed out his cheeks in frustration. "Seriously?" He thought.
Junhoe blew some air out of his nose "Okay, uh...let me get my phone, then"
Jinhwan stayed outside and waited for junhoe to get his phone from the car. He looked around the dark road. The forest looked pretty scary at night, he could barely see anything beyond the first few rows of trees.
It was eerily quiet. No cars around, no dogs barking, no people. Just nothing. Jinhwan kept looking at the trees. He kept thinking that something could jump out from them any moment now. He shook he head. "Stop scaring yourself!" He thought.
When he suddenly felt a hand grab his shoulders from behind, and a loud yell in his ears.
"Ahhh!!!" Jinhwan yelled in response, as he jumped, quickly turning around. Junhoe was already on the ground, laughing.
"I'm sorry! I just couldn't resist!" Junhoe said between laughter.
"Yah! You almost gave me a heart attack!" Jinhwan clutched his chest.
"Did I scare our little jinani hyung?" Junhoe finally got up and ruffled jinhwan's hair.
Normally, jinhwan wouldn't have liked being called "little". But he forgot about it as soon as he heard junhoe calling him by his nickname.
"Jinani...?" He thought. For some reason, hearing junhoe call him that made jinhwan happy.
"Here" junhoe threw his phone at jinhwan, who barely caught it. "Just turn on the flashlight"
After a few moments of uselessly looking around and poking random things, junhoe finally gave up. "I don't think we'll be able to fix this" junhoe closed the hood. "Anyways, I already called yunhyeong to come and get us, so we'll just have to wait for him"
Jinhwan slowly nodded, accepting the fact that they had to wait for at least two hours before yunhyeong arrived, and four more hours till they reached home. He was already getting tired and sleepy, since they had been walking the whole day.
They both sat in silence for a while, before junhoe took out his camera to check the pictures he had taken.
"Can i see?" Jinwhan asked?
Junhoe looked at him then put the camera in the middle, so they could both look. They were going through the pictures from the beginning of their day, when junhoe suddenly remembered something. He had jinhwan's pictures there.
His eyes went wide when he saw that the picture they were looking at was just a few moments before he snapped jinhwan's photo. Junhoe immediately took the camera to the side. Making jinhwan look up at him, confused by the sudden action.
Junhoe cleared his throat, trying to think of an excuse. "I uhh...I think we should sto-" he was cut off by his own phone ringing. He looked at at the screen before answering. "Thank you, yunhyeong"
"He says he's almost here" junhoe put down his phone after talking to yunhyeong.
"Finally!" Jinhwan breathed a sigh of relief.
It was quiet for a few moments, before jinhwan spoke up. "Junhoe-ah"
"Hm?" Junhoe turned to him.
"Do you believe in fate?"
"What makes you ask that?" He chuckled.
Jinhwan shrugged. "Just a random question that popped in my head" he looked straight ahead.
Junhoe thought for a moment before answering. "I guess i do. Isn't anything that ever happened fate?"
Jinhwan nodded thoughfully, then turned to face junhoe. "If you could go back in time, is there a moment you would want to relive? Or even change?"
Junhoe chuckled again. "What's with all these questions?"
Jinhwan shrugged and kept looking at junhoe, waiting for an answer.
Junhoe thought it was cute, so he decided to play along.
"Let's see..." he drummed his fingers on his lap. "I can't really think of anything right now. What about you?"
"Hmm...i think i would go back to when i was six years old. My mom had just baked my favorite cake" jinhwan was already smiling just at the thought of it. "And she was packing some snacks for a picnic at the beach"
"Why that specific day, though?
Jinhwan looked down with a sad smile. "It was the day before my mom passed away"
A sudden pang of guilt hit junhoe, he regretted asking that question, but before he could open his mouth to say anything, he heard a beep behind them, followed by a bright light reflecting in the mirror and hitting junhoe's eyes. Yunhyeong had finally arrived.
Junhoe sat in the front, next to yunhyeong, while jinhwan had the whole backseat for himself.
They were pretty tired already. Other than the low background music on the radio, the car was quiet.
Jinhwan leaned his head on the window. his eyelids felt heavy, it was like some kind of force was pulling them down. He felt a shiver run through his body, and rubbed his arms to try and warm himself a bit. Jinhwan looked at the empty space next to him and decided to lie down on the seat. They still had a couple hours left before they reached home.
Junhoe was jolted awake when he felt his head tipping forward. He cleared his throat, feeling embarrassed, and glanced around with his eyes to check if someone had noticed.
Looking out, the view was familiar to junhoe, they were already out of the forest and had finally reached the city. He turned around to the backseat to find jinhwan still asleep. He was sleeping on his side, with his hands tucked between his legs. Probably from being cold.
Junhoe felt a small smile creep up on his face, before turning back around.
