Chapter 28

"Master Zagan," a demon huffed, running through the room. Instantly dropping to his knees, bowing his head in submission. "The girl is at the Dark Moon Pack."

"How do you know this?"

"We were patrolling near their border, and caught a glimpse of her near their cells." Pausing for a moment, the next part of his statement was sure to anger the Master. "There's something else."

"Well, out with it!"

"S-she was with the Rogue King-"

"What?!" Rising in anger, he struck the lesser demon. "How did this happen?!"

Raising his hands in defense, he knew that his next sentence would decide his fate. "We're not sure, Master. Give us some time, and we can find out."

"No, I think it's time to send a message. Dear little Aylin will know whom she belongs to."

After a full meal, and cleaning up the kitchen, Aylin and Ezekiel found a place to sit on the couch to go over the file Daemon had given them. Fear took hold when the file was in her hand; fear of seeing the images from the previous file she looked at. The photographs of the carnage brought back unpleasant memories.

Opening it, first sight was the demon himself. Just gazing at the picture, slender physique, shoulder length, straight black hair, pale skin, sharp features. The one thing unseen was his eyes. "Can't see his eyes," Aylin remarked to Ezekiel.

"From what I understand Zagan's eyes aren't like lower level demons."

Confused, she turned to her mate. "How do you know that?"

Leaning forward, resting his elbows on his legs, Ezekiel looked ashamed. "Damn it, I didn't want to tell you like this. I-I've seen him before."

Sitting back slightly, Ezekiel was trying to come up with the best way to tell his mate the horrible truth. After trying for so long to avoid the conversation, he got smacked in the face with the realization. "Do you know why I have the title Rogue King?"

"Being in this pack, they never really dispelled who you were. It seemed to be forbidden, in fact."

Rubbing his eyes in frustration, Ezekiel shook his head. "Fuckin' Stephan Morris," he whispered, angrily. "My father, the former Alpha of our pack, had a run-in with demons toward the middle of his time. It was around the same time, when the war broke out, my mother was lost."

Having an epiphany, Aylin realized something she never considered before. "This is personal for you, isn't it?"

"In a way, yes. Now that you've been targeted, it's much more personal for me. I can't let anything happen to you." Laying a hand on his thigh, the sad expression in his eyes, almost made her lose control. Taking a deep breath, he continued. "The reason we are considered rogues, is because my father chose to go to war with the demons, while the other Alpha's chose not to. He was labeled a pyriah, and exiled."

"Clearly, your father won against the demons though-"

"At what cost?! Hundreds died, and my mother...." Squeezing his hand, the thought of bringing back awful memories was as hard for the king as it was for the woman. "My father was a shell of man after the war. In his grief for his lost mate, he took his own life."

"So, that's why you saw mates as a weakness? The loss of your mother?" Shame written all over his features gave Aylin her answer. A cold shiver went through her; everything made sense. "I was right, you should have rejected me."

"No!" The king grabbed his mate, placing her on his lap. "Now, I understand what my father was talking about when he would speak of my mother. I always watched how their love grew everyday, and that's how I feel about you. You're here now, and I can't imagine a life without you." Kissing his temple, there was a sense of softness between them.

"We still don't know why Zagan wants me. There's probably nothing in the file that tells us either."

Grabbing the file off the coffee table, the contents spilled onto the floor. Picking up the pieces, something caught Aylin's eye; a dossier on her mother. "What the hell?" she whispered. Reading over the whole page, astonishment overtook her.

"What is it, Ay?"

"This says that my mother was not originally a member of this pack. She showed up, much the same way, I arrived at your pack. My father was the wolf who found her on pack lands, and brought her back here. The former Alpha always kept an eye on her, because he didn't trust her. Shortly after her arrival, demons began attacking. After six months, the attacks subsided. When my father realized who my mother was to him, then she was finally accepted into the pack. Everything was quiet until I turned fourteen. Then the final attack happened, supposedly killing my parents, and many others."

"Look here, this page is about you." Handing Aylin the page, her eyes raked over every printed word. "The fuck--"

"I think Daemon has some explaining to do-"

"And I intend to," another voice cut in.

Leaping up, all of the king's energy was used in not strangling the Alpha that stood before him. Aylin stood in front of her mate, hoping that perhaps Ezekiel wouldn't strike. Peering around the Alpha, both Quill and Angus stood, arms crossed.

"Start talking then!" the king bellowed.

"Zeke, please," Aylin begged.

"No, this pack is run like shit! You reject this woman, and think keeping secrets is such a great fucking idea?! Well, news flash, now demons are going to attack this pack, probably mine too. I, we, have a right to know just what the fuck is going to happen to us!"

Taken aback, Daemon shook his head. "What makes you think they will attack here?"

"Do you know nothing, pup? They probably already know that Aylin is here." Quill's voice was a welcome distraction for a moment.

"Do not disrespect me on my land!"

"When we were on patrol the last night, the disgusting smell of demon came to us. When we followed it, the smell continued past your borders, heading north. Chances are, they know we're here. Zeke, whatever information we need, it has to be gotten now."

"I'll do you one better. Take him with you."
