Shawn pulled out his phone and showed her his Instagram post. After she'd seen it, he deleted it. It's not like he needed it anymore. He then told her how he'd gotten the response from Lacy and had gone to her house.
"I owe you a Burberry scarf!" Marissa exclaimed when he was done.
"What? No! I broke the snow globe. It was my responsibility to replace it. The scarf was getting off cheap. I would have paid a lot more if I'd been asked," he said.
"I feel like I owe you something a least," she said.
Shawn pushed some dirty thoughts out of his mind about how she could repay him. Holy hell this girl was attractive. He willed himself to stop thinking like a horny 19 year old.
"Would you go out to dinner with me after Christmas?" he asked. As the words left his mouth, he realized he had no idea how old she was. Shit. What if she was underage? She was drinking a beer, but it's not like 16 year olds don't drink.
"I feel like you are asking me out of guilt," she said, looking down at her hands.
"I'm not, but if you don't want to go, it's fine," he said.
There was a brief awkward silence, so he stood up and walked around the room to admire all the snow globes.
He saw a graduation picture on the wall. "When did you graduate?" he asked, knowing this would indicate her age.
She looked at him and followed his eyes to the photo. "2016," she said.
He was relieved to hear she was his age.
He finished his beer. "I should probably get going. It's Christmas Eve and my family will have me up early tomorrow."
As she walked him towards the door, it opened and a teenage boy walked in.
"Hey, Pete," Marissa said.
Pete looked at his sister and the stranger in their foyer. "S'up."
Marissa put her hand on Shawn's elbow and guided him to the door and out into the porch, where she joined him.
"Thank you so much for finding the snow globe," she said, her hand still on his arm.
"I meant it about dinner," Shawn said. "Can I text you about it in a couple days?"
Marissa smiled and nodded. She let go of his arm, and he walked down the path to his Jeep. He waved before getting in.
She went back inside.
"What the fuck, Marissa! Was that Shawn Mendes? What was he doing here?" Pete asked.
"It's a long story. Come sit down and I'll tell you."
When she was done telling him what had happened, Pete just shook his head.
"So you are going out on a date with him?" he asked.
"You should. It's been the shittiest year ever. You deserve some happiness."
"Don't get ahead of yourself. I just met him today and he did a really nice thing. That doesn't mean he's a great guy. He might be a douchey celebrity. I might dislike him. He might dislike me."
