Chapter 37: Houston, We Have A Problem

As Faye walked beside Jonathan back from their afternoon classes, she focused on how the air felt alive. Like something was happening. Like the oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the air were buzzing with conversation. Because something was going to happen.

She turned to him and looked at his ankle were his tracking device lay bare. Jonathan always felt safe to Faye. They could walk to and back from lessons together in silence, and neither of them would mind. It was like a blanket of comfort that they gave each other. Almost like their thoughts were loud enough to mute any actual conversation.

She decided to break it.

"She's coming you k-know" Faye stuttered out. She was getting better, she was trying at least.

Jonathan knew who she was talking about. He turned to look at her, and an empty look hollowed his expression. "I heard."

Faye swallowed and thought about how Marie was joining the Mexico trip only for Jonathan. A couple days had passed since his entrance after his overdose and neither of them have spoken to each other. The way Jonathan looks at her whenever she's near had the ability to make Faye smile in recognition. It was the same way she sometimes looked at Alex.

"Faye, what they had is over" Jonathan spoke to the grass. He sounded like he was telling himself more than her. "It's not like that anymore, I... I know she doesn't want to see it, but the way I look at it is that - I have to be it for her.. because she's it for me."

Faye didn't answer. She did not need to. The conversation was dead and they both knew it. She adjusted her messenger bag on her shoulder and slowed down her pace as they neared their cabin. Jonathan always dropped her first.

She walked up the few steps that led to the cabin door and she turned to wave at Jonathan, but stopped when she saw the perplexed look on his face as he stared at the towel hanging from the wood bar.

He looked up at Faye and asked "Why are you friends with her? You two are so different"

"Who?"

"The devil wears nada"

Faye laughed under her breath and knew he was talking about Blaize. Jonathan and Blaize did not get along whatsoever, and Faye had a small inkling that it was because they were both more similar to each other than they'd like to think.

She decided to go with the honest answer. "She was there for me, at a time when no one else was. She may be an ass, but I owe her my life"

Not a single stutter.

-----------------------------------

Faye groaned for the third time in the last ten minutes.

Before camp, she had managed to narrow down her belongings to different categories - one of them being necessarily unnecessary. She further managed to bring it down later on but apparently, it still was too much because one of Alex's first comments to her was that she packed for the whole state of Texas.

Fun Fact: Texas can fit the entire world's population if everyone stood standing.

Faye wanted to hit Alex for that comment, but at the time she barely knew him. Now she sat on top of her one suitcase that she was only allowed to bring and couldn't get the zipper to go all the way around. She had placed the suitcase on their bed and had been working at it for the past hour and a half now.  She twisted her waist and reached for where the zipper began and tried once more, just as she was about to make it to the quarter way line, beating her highscore from the last round - the door swung open and in walked The Senator of Texas himself.
