I didn't have anything for breakfast, and you don't see me complaining." I say

"Yeah, well I'm a boy." Mason says

"Ok? And I'm a girl. What does that have to do with anything?" I ask

"I'm growing." Mason says.

"OK? So am I." I say

"You know what? Let's just eat lunch instead of arguing."Masons ays

"Good idea, but first let's go check out that house." I say. We turn right and walk for about five minutes. We knock on eh door, and Mason says,

"There is probably nobody home."

"Let's just wait." I say. After I said that, the door opened.

"Hi. Can I help you?" A man asks. He looks in maybe his mid forties. He looks down at me and sees I'm just wearing a jacket.

"Yeah, um could you maybe point us out to which way Utah is?" I ask. Mason is as pale as a ghost.

"Yeah. Sure. Why don't you come in while I grab my phone." He says. "My name is Henry, by the way."
"Ok." I say about to walk in. Masons puts his hand on the or of my stomach and says,

"Actually, I just remembered. I have a map in my pack. But thank you."

"You sure?" Henry asks

"Yes. Thank you, we should get going now." Maon says

"Good luck." Henry says closing his door.

"What the heck did you do that for?" I say raising my voice

"Shh. Let's walk a little further, then I'll tell you." Mason says pulling my arm.

"Mason ! What's going on?" I ask.

"I'll tell you later just keep walking."Mason says, I pull my arm away and say,

"Not till you tell me what's going on."

"Fine, but let's just keep walking." Mason says

"Ok. Talk." I demand

"K. So the first time I was kidnapped by Michael Conner, he was one of the people who helped him. He was second in charge. His name is Henry Reon." Mason says. "And I think he remembered me to. He kept eyeing me wierd."
"How many people were involved in this kidnapping situation? I ask

"A lot. We have to be careful." Mason says

"K.Well, do you want some lunch now?" i ask

"Nope. I lost my appetite." Mason replies. "Let's just keep walking."

It feels like we've been walking for like three hours. On the way I've asked Mason if he wanted to eat, but he just keeps saying he's not hungry right now. I feel like we are going the right way. Because there has been more houses. But Mason refuses to let me go ask them for directions. He says it's just in case.

"So, are you hungry yet?" ask a little afraid that he might say no again.

"Rachel, are you hungry? You've asked me at least five times." Mason says

"Yes! PLease let's take a break for lunch. I'm starving to death." I say

"You know you could have just said something." Mason says laughing little.

"You were acting scary. I didn't want to upset you even more." I say sitting down.

"You probably upset me more by asking me one hundred times if I was hungry."Mason says

"Six time actually." I Correct

Still." Mason says.We have sandwiches for lunch, this time I made four . Two for me, and two for Masons.

"Finally. The beast is fed." Mason teases.

"You were just a s hungry."I say with my mouth full.

"You're a lady. Where's your manners?" Mason asks using a smart tone.

"I'm a beast, remember? I have no manners." " I say also using a smart tone. We finish eating and get back on the go. "What is the first thing you want to do once you get back?" I ask

"Well, I'm probably fired, so I'll need to find a new job, then I'll need to pay for rent." Mason answers

"What for?" I ask confused

"Well I don't have parents, so I need a job to pay rent in this apartment I live in."Mason says

"So you live by yourself?" I ask

"Yeah nobody else to live with. My grandparents are all dead." Mason says

"Well, while you try finding a new job, you can live with me for awhile." I say

"Wouldn't that be weird? Your parents would never approve I bet." Mason says

"Of course they would. You've been taking care of me all this time. And plus, your my best friend. THey probably wouldn't mind.: I say. I just realized Mason looks really disappointed. I don't really know why. But I want to figure out why. "What's the matter?" I ask. Mason sighs and says

"Nothing. We should really get going now." Mason is avoiding eye contact with me. He doesn't say it. But I can tell. We pack up lunch in silence practically. I try starting conversation, but Mason just leads it off to a dead end. So I give up. We walk for about a hour it feels like. Mason is avoiding me. I still have no idea.

"What's the matter?" I ask a second time.

"Nothing." Mason says

"Don't say nothing. You're avoiding conversation. And avoiding eye contact. So don't say it

'S nothing. Stop. We are not moving until you tell me what's up." say Mason sighs and says,

"Why did you kiss me that night?"

"Wha-" I start until Mason cuts me off.

"Was it just to lead me on? If so, that was cruel." Mason says

"That's not why." I say

"Really? Cuz it sure seems that way.You are just acting like nothing happened. Do you even like me that way?" Mason asks

"What is making you think otherwise?" I ask. He deserves to know that I only want to be friends for now. But it will break his heart. I can't tell him.

"You don't really act like you do. And when you said, you're my best friend. That didn't exactly tell me you had feeling for me that way." Mason says

"I really do like you. I promise. It's just, I have to decide between, do I want a best friend till I get back? Or a boyfriend. And I choose a best friend, because I need someone I can talk to. Someone that things can't really get awkward between. Someone I can cry on and not get embarrassed."I say trying to catch my breath

"What do you mean?" Mason asks

"I don't want to ever go through any of my life without a best friend I can lean on. So you're my replacement for Maddie till we get back." I say

"So what is going to happen when we get back, are you just going to ditch me and forget me and how any of this ever happened?"Mason asks

"I could never forget you." I say. "It will be like a promotion. If you still feel this way about me, I will be your girlfriend. But for now, I really need a best friend." I say.
