James almost barged straight into Jackie, such was the haste and the anger with which he pushed through the doors. The girl grabbed a hold of his arm as he rushed by her and he spun around, his face a picture of fury.
“What's wrong?” she asked, genuinely concerned. They were only a small group and whilst that was definitely a good thing when it came to supplies and the like, it was not so good when it came to ill tempers. The last thing any of the group could afford was to alienate their friends. “I don't think I've ever seen you so pissed off.”
“Bloody Annalise,” he retorted, sharply. “That's what's wrong.”
“Whatever she did, I'm sure she had good reason,” Jackie replied, jumping to the defence of her good friend.
“Jack and I spent all afternoon yesterday preparing a patch of land so that we can grow some of our own food, veggies and the like.”
“Well that's good, right?”
“Yeah, at least it was until I get out there this morning to find that Annalise has buried Ken's body there, and she categorically stated that if I plant anything there, she'll do some not very ladylike things.”
“Well...” Jackie said, though the pause was all that James needed to pounce.
“It doesn't bloody surprise me that you're taking her side!” With that he shrugged her away and stormed off.
Heading outside, Jackie could clearly see the area that James and Jack had prepared. They'd even extended the security fence so that anyone tending a potential crop could do so without fear of Zed trouble. Rather than the rows of planted seeds though, there was a mound of earth with a crudely constructed cross beside it. It was much the same as Jackie's namesake's grave, though as she had been given the choice, she'd opted to bury Jackie in a woodland clearing on the hotel grounds. Jackie had always loved the trees...
Unlike James, it appeared Jack had taken the news that their vegetable patch required relocation rather well, for he was already putting the finishing touches to a second extension to the fence whilst Sarah, Fawaz and Richard turned the earth in preparation for the planting of seeds.
“Everything all right out here, Jack?” she asked as she approached. “I ran into James and he's a little annoyed to say the least.”
“I know he is,” the big man replied, turning with a huge grin on his face. “I'm probably partly to blame for that, as I told him to stop being such a bloody idiot. 'Lise can bury Ken's body where she wants, I've got no issue with that. He meant a lot to her.”
“At least someone's being sensible about things,” she replied, her grin matching his.
“Aye,” he replied. “Anyway, Annalise stormed off right after the argument, took one of the Range Rovers out for a drive.”
“Well, she can look after herself.”
“Aye she can,” he said. “And hey you never know, she might come back with some beer. This Summer heat is kicking my arse, I could murder a cold one.”
“There'll be nothing cold about it,” said Jackie with a chuckle. “But yeah, I know what you mean!”
