Chapter 28

Madraeus threw Whitney's clothes in the washing machine in his laundry room and then made his way back to Whitney's apartment. He heard Justin groan as he walked into the living room.

Madraeus smiled grimly. He walked over and squatted down in front of Justin. He grabbed a handful of hair and lifted his head off the floor. Blood was trickling out the side of his mouth, his nose was smashed, and there were scratches down the side of his face.

"So you are the mighty Justin?" he muttered.

"Humph." Madraeus let go of his head letting it hit the floor with a thump.

He then walked over to examine the head of the werewolf. He didn't recognize this wolf. Madraeus frowned. Philtzer would know if he was local or an import. Philtzer always knew more than he let on.

From out in the hallway he heard the elevator doors open. Instantly he was on alert.

"Ray?" Rami called through the door as Philtzer and Thomas came through the kitchen.

"Whoa! You have a party boss?" Philtzer whistled as Madraeus moved to open the door for Rami.

"Oh yeah, big party, Philtzer, sorry you missed it." Madraeus rolled his eyes realizing too late that he sounded like Whitney.

Philtzer grinned at him.

"You recognize that wolf?" Madraeus jerked his head toward the body.

Thomas and Philtzer kicked broken bits of furniture out of their way as they moved over to examine what was left of Justin's wolf.

"I don't know this one."

"Not at all?" Madraeus asked.

Philtzer looked up at Thomas who shrugged then shook his head. "Nope."

"Cecelia seems to have a lot of new friends." Madraeus frowned.

"Alright, if you would be so kind as to show our guest to his room," Madraeus gestured toward Justin.

Philtzer saluted and hopped over to the debris. Thomas grabbed one arm and Philtzer grabbed the other then carried him out the kitchen door.

Madraeus looked back at Rami.

"You alright?" the giant rumbled.

Madraeus nodded, "Yes, just a few bruises and a couple of scratches. He only brought two friends."

 "And Whitney?"

"She is resting in my room," he said, "Justin tried to choke her before I got here. Her neck is going to be bruised and she can barely speak. I'd like to go back and check on her if you can start on clean up."

"Go." Rami sighed. He hated cleaning up these messes. He missed the old days where you just burnt down the building.

Madraeus made his way back to Whitney. He was expecting her to be a bit of a mess, hysterical or even crying. He did not however expect her to be asleep. Madraeus shook his head, this woman was a marvel.

Quietly and careful not to wake her he lifted her from the chair and carried her to the bed. She whimpered a little and curled into him clutching his shirt front. He laid her down and gently pried her fingers from his shirt. She shivered a little so he reached down and re-arranged the blanket then pulled a second blanket up over her.

Sitting down on the edge of the bed he watched her sleep for a moment. It was over now. It was time to keep his promise to send her away. Madraeus sighed at least she would be safe now. After a few more minutes he finally tore himself away from her bedside and went back to help Rami.
