Delta: Be a Man

The pack had settled into a calm routine over the last few weeks. Preparations for the leaders departure was well underway. The Alpha, Beta and Gamma had all secured their mates and the pack was safe in the knowledge that their Luna, along with her second and third in command would be with them when their male leaders embark on their hunt.

Andrew, however, wasn't as easily settled in the tranquility that befell Night Claw. He knew it was only the calm before the storm. The real challenge would be getting through the next couple of days before they all left the pack territory. And he was terrified.

The leaders left on Saturday. And now, on Thursday afternoon, Drew was piling the last of the supplies into the few four wheel drives that would accompany the leaders on their hunt. The Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi and Omega would be in charge of driving the four-by-fours, and in turn, driving any of the pack mates that were found on the hunt back to Night Claw.

"Almost done?"

Drew turned around to see his father, Aart, previous Delta of Night Claw standing behind him. He was leaning against one of the pack cars. He held a glass of water out to Drew, who gladly took and downed the whole thing.

"Just the last few bags to try and cram into the boot and we should be good to go."

The last car had less room than the others in its boot, as it was one of the seven seaters that would carry the mates back to pack territory on the hunt.

"Donovan and Lex not out here helping you?" Aart asked, bending down to lift one of the bags into the boot of the car.

"Nah, they're too busy with their mates." Drew laughed.

"You're up next." Aart commented, a smirk on his face as he looked at his son.

"I know," Drew said dryly.

"What's with the attitude?"

"I'm not sure this whole thing is for me, you know?"

"No, I'm not sure I do know, son." Aart said, dropping the last of the bags into the boot before shutting it, and turning to his son.

"I have to go off on a hunt for my mate, only to find her and have to send her home and leave her behind." Drew said, running his hands through his hair in frustration. "Max, Donovan and Lex, they all get to spend time with their mates here in the pack, get to know them and complete the mating process with them before they leave. Hell, you met Mum back here at the pack, so I don't expect you to understand my position here."

"You're right," Aart sighed, "I don't understand. You have to suck it up son. Yes, you've been unlucky not to find your mate here on pack territory. But think of it from Max's point of view. He met Lyra weeks ago, has forged an incredibly strong bond with her, and now has to leave her behind. It's going to be a lot tougher on him than it is for you, son. You have to be the man out there, looking out for your friends and brothers who will have a part of themselves back here at home."
