Inkscopy Presents: A Peek into Malcolm's childhood

Hey guys!(And girls. And cats, dogs, all living things that are reading this.) I'm Inkie! I've been using this account for a bit more than a year now, and I just wanted to say how much I love this app, sharing my writing with the world and of course, the amazing people I meet here. I love ya all.

My post today is related to one of the major characters in my Paranormal/Teen Fiction novel, named "Reckless Girls Don't Die". Of course, you don't have to read the book if you don't want to, but I have a feeling that you are going to be really, really confused if you don't xD

Malcolm could not remember when he last had a birthday party thrown for him. 5 years ago? 15 years ago? 25 years ago? Time passed so slowly for the Undead like him that even he was unsure of what age he actually was.

But as another demon crossed the room with a handful of black streamers and something that vaguely resembled a human skull, he remembered what age he was supposed to turn today.

10. The age he would have been, if he was human.

The dark-haired Prince played restlessly with his black locks. His father had dyed it black 5 years ago, after his silver hair drew too much attention to who, or what his father had been sleeping around with.

Everyone knew that Malcolm's supposed mother had black hair and dark skin.

To quell all the rumours, his father had grabbed his son's silky, silver hair in rage and dyed it midnight black, before tossing him to the side like a toy and claiming that Malcolm's silver hair was just his idea of a joke. Malcolm had whimpered at the loss of his liquid silver hair and cried for his father bring it back, but all he earned was a smarting slap to the cheek.

A Prince of Death should never be seen crying.

Straightening his white dress shirt out, Malcolm snapped his fingers for one of the demon servants to come to his side. A foxy girl who look not much older then him scampered over, her slitted eyes not daring to meet his. Malcolm was always annoyed that no one would play with him, in fear of upsetting him by accident.

He was a child at heart. A child that nobody acknowledged.

"I'm bored," He said simply, inspecting the demon girl closer. She was pretty for a demon, and her eyes glittered with wonder when they met his.

"Is that an order? What do you want me to do?" The demon girl tilted her head to one side inquisitively, her eyes wide. The young prince took an instant liking to her curious expression.

Malcolm could see his own reflection from the large mirror across the room, a sulky 10-year-old on a fancy couch, complaining to a tiny girl crouched on the floor. The crown on his head almost felt silly.

"Play with me," Malcolm requested, reaching from beneath his couch a set of Lego, some peculiar, brightly-coloured plastic blocks that were the only human toys he was allowed to own. "Pu-lease?" His words were a little slurred, like a child who could barely contain their excitement.

The demon bit on the edge of her pink lip. "I... I'm not allowed to, am I?" She mumbled, before shooting him another shy glance. "We could, but you have to cut your cake soon."

Malcolm gave the black cake on the table an eye roll. "I couldn't care less. Come, let's go to my playroom," He grabbed her by the hand on impulse, pulling her behind him as they darted up the brick stairs. A demon carrying a tray of blood-red juice growled as they nearly crashed into him, before seeing Malcolm and slinking away in silence.

"You can come in, you know," Malcolm laughed, a little breathy from running. The demon leaned against his door, twisting her blue-and-brown braids nervously. Of course she was nervous, Malcolm thought. No demons had been in this playroom before. His father never liked any of the demons, other than his advisor Nariel. "I don't bite," Malcolm assured her, blinking furiously.

The demon gave him a small nod, before squatting down beside him. "You have so many toys," She commented timidly, but the awe in her voice was unquestionable. "You must have so much fun every day."

Malcolm went silent. And he stared at the Lego blocks in his hand for such a long time that his new friend peered at him anxiously. "I'm sorry, my Prince. D-D-Did I saw something wrong?" She stuttered, her small hands instantly going around his, as if to comfort him.

The Prince almost flinched. No one had touched him, or dared to, other than his Father who beat him up with those cruel hands. But this girl, with her soft words and soft hands and soft heart, was slowly melting away at the edges of his heart.

"No, you're right. I should be happy with all these toys," Malcolm whispered sadly. "But I'm so lonely. Father doesn't allow me to have friends. I sit here everyday, by myself, playing with my toys alone." When he finished, he was surprised to find the edges of his eyes wet and hurriedly wiped it away with his pale hands.

The demon girl looked genuinely upset at his words, and she reached over to brush his tears from his face. "Don't cry, my Prince. I'll play with you. I can use my free time to come up to your playroom every night. Please don't cry." Her voice was calming to Malcolm, and he rested his head on her shoulder as she patted his hair.

Oh, little did the Prince know how much this encounter would be the start of something very, very bad.
