The Only Way

Chapter 20 - The Only Way

I hear a howl and I quickly look around in shock that there are still werewolves in the forest, I go to Daina and Melissa, while they were investigating something while I slept just now. Suddenly, we hear more howls sounding continuously, Daina and Melissa turn around and run towards me carrying me into the forest again. I gain my feet and run with them, I run quickly without question, we suddenly get a boost by Daina. We hear the growls of werewolves behind us, I think that there are about three of them behind us, I try not to think about it. I carelessly think of other stuff that I was planning to do, but we end up being chased by vicious werewolves. The werewolves bring down the trees when they pounce on them, I continue running, trying not to look back. I see the full moon right in front of me and I growl, but I don't realise that it's going down. I trip on a root sticking out, all the three  werewolves pounce onto me, but before they reach me, they disappear, I check for the full moon, but there is no full moon. We all smile while panting really hard, I lie down and close my eyes, Melissa and Daina do the same. But not for long. I open my eyes and see the scorching sun in the sky, I drag Daina and Melissa into the shade. The heat has got me sweating already, I start to feel a little dizzy and my mouth is too dry to even have consciousness, my lips are cracking from dehydration, I can't stand it anymore, I pass out. Melissa and Daina get up and see me on the ground unconscious, they carry me up to rest on a tree, Daina goes to the edge of the shade and throws a stone out into the sun, the stone burns to ashes, Daina backs away. Melissa wipes away my sweat, and tries to find some water, but there is no water in this hot day, the forest is turning into a desert. Daina comes to me and sees that my lips are cracking, she kneels down and runs her fingers on my lips, it cools me down, but it doesn't heal me completely. Daina gets up and runs to the bridge in high speed, she finds a little water left, she scoops as much water as she can and runs back to me, she pours some on me and some into my mouth. I start to wake up, rolling around and groaning, Daina and Melissa back away from me to let me have some air while I start to wake up, but I just go back to being unconscious, Daina and Melissa sigh. 

The sky is getting darker, Daina and Melissa sigh in relief, but the sky is getting darker, not the sun, Melissa throws a stone into the sun and it still burns to ashes. Melissa backs away to Daina while she is checking on me, I don't wake up, I only roll around and keep groaning. The hotness has gone down a little, when I'm a little cooler, Daina runs her fingers on my lips to sooth me more, unexpectedly, I wake up. I open my eyes slowly like I've been blinded, Melissa and Daina are right infront of me staring at me, I groan and try to get up, but I can't. Melissa and Daina push me back onto the tree, not letting me get up, I see that Melissa's lips are cracked and her skin is really dry, I touch my lips for Melissa to see that she has cracked lips. Melissa touches her lips, she feels that they are cracked and dry, Daina runs back to the bridge and gets some water for Melissa, after Melissa drinks they both go back to the bridge to get some water for me. They come back and put the water in my mouth, the one that Melissa has I take from her and pour it on my body, I feel much more better than just now. Daina and Melissa help me up and I'm grateful that I'm actually getting up for a long time, we slowly walk through the forest , back to the bridge, I strangely find it hard to walk. When the bridge is in sight, Daina rushes towards it and immediately drinks the water from the river, Melissa checks the area for any ghosts or werewolves. I drop down into the river, letting the current rush over my body, the water that goes over my face, I suck it up. Melissa tells me to get out of the river, I get out of the river, I go to the bridge to rest and the wind is blowing really hard today after the sunlight that almost killed me. There are no werewolves or ghosts, guess they all went when the full moon went down, Daina comes up to me with a squirrel, which is extremely hard to catch, since it's so fast. Daina makes a fire and cooks the squirrel above it, while Melissa finds some fruit in the area that we are in, we don't want anybody going out into the forest right now alone, it can be dangerous. The squirrel is ready and is ready to eat, Daina brings a piece for me and Melissa, she has one for herself, she gets some water to drink first, I go down to the river to have some as well, while Melissa eats the squirrel without drinking. 

"Thank you" I say in a soft voice

"For what?" Daina says

"For taking care of me" I say

"Your the one who took care of us" Daina says

"Really?" I say

"You took us into the shade when the sun was out" Daina says

"Oh yeah" I say

We go back up to the bridge looking at Melissa in shock, she finished the piece of squirrel already, wow she eats fast, guess she's really hungry. 

"What? I'm really hungry" Melissa says

I was right.

"Well alright then" I say

"Now we'll eat" Daina says

"Alright, I'll get a drink of water" Melissa says

Me and Daina eat the squirrel slowly, enjoying the taste and the texture of it, Melissa drinks a lot of water, to be honest. 

"How's it?" Daina asks

"How's what?" I ask

"The squirrel" Daina says

"Oh, it's very tasty" I say

"Good" Daina says

"Melissa is taking a long time to drink" I say

"Yeah" Daina agrees

"I think we better check on her" I say

"Alright" Daina says

We look over the ledge of the bridge and see Melissa still drinking water from the river. I finish the squirrel while looking at Melissa drink loads of water, she stops drinking and comes back up to the bridge. 

"Night" Melissa says and going to sleep

"Night" I say

"Night" Daina says

"Now I'm going as well" Daina says

"Alright, night" I say

Daina goes to sleep and I'm the only one left, awake on the bridge. 

"Goodnight Daina, Melissa and me" I whisper to myself and them
