AS soon as she strutted into the office, I couldn't take my eyes off her. Her walk was smooth and elegant, and you could just feel the poise and grace emanating from her. She was rocking a tailored white cocktail dress that hugged her curves in all the right places, doing wonders for her natural beauty and making her look like a total Hollywood icon. I mean, seriously, she was giving off majorly sophisticated and glamorous vibes.
Oh, finesse, this woman was a damsel in distress.
I was totally in the zone, sipping on my wine and double-tapping my laptop's screen to zoom in on the surveillance footage of her silhouette. She's a straight-up genius, she found her way to my spot with ease. Her memory skills were seriously impressive. But as soon as I saw her getting closer, I had to act fast and throw on my mask to hide the embarrassment of my screw-up. I didn't want her to catch on to just how badly I'd messed things up.
For a certain period of my life, I was like a robot, keeping my emotions and pain on lock. But all that hard work and effort seemed to have flown out the window. And now those emotions are creeping back up on me like a ghost, and I'm struggling not to let them take over.
"Miss Rhio?" She was looking at me when I spun around, and a forced smile spread across her lovely face. "D-did you cry?"
"No." I tried to say more but I got choked up.
"Sorry to break in, but I need to ask you something," she said, peering at my device and recognizing herself on the screen. I fluttered my eyelashes. Oh, this naive woman didn't know I was keeping tabs on her through the hidden surveillance cameras in my office and penthouse.
I swiveled my chair to face her completely. Not wanting to show any vulnerability, I coldly asked, "Who gave you permission to intrude here?"
"I just wanted to see you." Mautal-utal niyang sagot.
"Really?" was all I said in a sarcastic tone. As the soles of my feet cramped from the stilettos I had been adorned with all morning, she took them off my feet before I even had a chance to reach down and do it on my own, which caught me by surprise. Her hands were warm, and for some reason, I froze in place. This had never happened to me before, despite many men trying to do the same thing as a kind gesture, only to be met with my disdain.
As I stared at her, I couldn't help but feel both amused and unnerved. My lazy look lasted for a few moments, but I realized I had to break it.
"The party is still going on. You should return," I said, forcefully pulling my foot away from her attention.
But why was she here? Wasn't she supposed to be with Brent, enjoying the night with the love of her life? Confusion clouded my mind as I tried to understand what could have driven her to come here. Was she losing her mind? Ano'ng gusto niya? Cookies?
"Ikaw ba?"
Ah, pointless question?
"Iyong nagsayaw sa akin noong pinatay ang ilaw."
For a few minutes, I stayed mute, trying to understand what she had just said out of thin air.
Guilt consumed me as I thought back about what I did. I only wanted to dance with her, but now I realize it may have been a mistake. I saw him in the crowd and sprinted up to this place from the stage, trying to stay out of any further painful run-ins. And here we are, the two of us, and I couldn't help but wonder if it's all simply because I saw someone or something else.
