I unlock Alex's front door using the spare key I have and enter quietly and cautiously. I take off my earphones and wrap them around my phone and toss it inside my bag.

I walk through the messy living room and make my way upstairs, towards Alex's room. I stand outside his door and knock before opening it.

It's empty.

"Alex!" I call out but get no response. There's no point in checking his parents' room because they lock it whenever they leave the house on trips.

I descend the stairs and decide to check the kitchen. There's a half empty pizza box lying on the table. I touch it. It's cold. Maybe he's not home. I turn to the sink and see two beer bottles in it.

Great! He's been drinking. He's a lightweight. And now I don't know where the hell he is. I have to look for him.

I sharp noise catches my attention.

I whip around and see nothing. But, I swear I heard it. It came from the basement. And the kitchen leads to the basement.

Someone's in the basement messing with Alex's stuff. Or it's just Alex.

Either way, I grab a butter knife in one hand and very slowly and cautiously open the basement door. The lights are off.

I take my phone out of my bag and leave the earphones in the bag. I turn my flashlight on, instead of turning the lights on. I have a butter knife in my right hand and my phone in my left, my finger hovering over the emergency call button.

I leave the door open, just in case.

I take agonizingly slow steps and hear glass shatter.

I can hear my heart thumping in my ears and I try to keep my breathing normal. My hands are shaking, and it's not from the cold.

I catch sight of a shadow on the wall. I move my flashlight in the person's direction but that person lunges at me. I let out a scream and my knife hovers a few inches away from the person's eyes.

More specifically, Alex's eye.

I let out a sigh and drop the knife, and smack Alex on his shoulder. "You fucking scared the living crap out of me!"
