Helpless. That's all I could feel right now. My best friend was going into the games. She was leaving me behind.

I knocked lightly on the door so I could say goodbye to Katniss.

"Come in." She answered quietly.

I opened the door to be surprised that Gale was in here.

"I thought it was my turn to say goodbye." I huffed angrily walking past Gale and pulling Katniss into a tight hug.

"I was just leaving." He growled.

Katniss rolls her eyes.

"Can you guys please be civil? For me?" She asked.

I looked over to Gale and thought about it. She's right. It's just that Gale and I have never got along well. We both wanted Katniss's attention and fought a lot. We both vied for being Katniss's best fiend. At first it was just light teasing when we were together but now it became mutual hatred.

"You're right. I'm sorry."

Gale walked away from the door and sat down with us.

"I just want to thank you guys. It's really helped having both of you in my life. I know you don't get along well but you can for me. Please just be there for each other." Katniss tears up slightly. My eyes are watering too.

"We will." Gale assures her.

"It's going to be fine. You're coming back." I smile, "First you need to kick some Capital ass."

For once there is light laugher in the room. The mood of the room changes drastically when a hard knock pounds at the door.

"Times up." An angry voice calls out through the door.

Katniss gets up and leaves us just a small wave before disappearing for what could be the last time I ever see her. Once she is gone I drop on the couch next to Gale. The shock has worn off and I don't know what to do with myself.

Three Days Later

Gale and I have getting along surprisingly well since Katniss has left.   I think the potential of losing Katniss has brought us closer than ever. Gale comes over to my house to watch the parade and the interviews. After what Peeta said about Katniss I expected him to be upset by it. He's loved her since we were children playing together. He seemed unaffected by Peeta's words.

"Hello." I greet Gale as he walks into my house and sits on the couch comfortably.

"They closed the mines for the days. Something about Snow wanting all of us watching the first day of the games." Gale swallows.

"Oh." I can't think of any words to help ease the anxiety we're both facing.

I walk over and sit down on the couch next to Gale. He looks at our closer proximity out of the corner of his eye.

"Are you okay?" I ask, "I know we haven't really been the best of friends the past few years but you can talk to me."

"Why haven't we been friends the past few years?" Gale asks.

His question surprises me. I wasn't expecting him to say anything at all, let alone have it be about our relationship.

"I-I'm not really sure." I answer honestly.

"We used to be a trio. I never understood what changed." He shakes his head.

"You broke the unspoken rule." I answer, finally coming up with the reasoning to what I have questioned for years.

"What are you talking about?"

"You loved her. It changed the group dynamic. We no longer were a trio that relied on each other but the two of you were something and I was a third wheel. You only talked to her and picked her over me. So I grew closer with Katniss and chose her over you."

"I never loved her like that."

I look up and see that Gale is staring directly at me. No blinking, the tension increasing.

"What?" I ask.

"I never loved Katniss like that. She's only ever been a friend. But you are right, I did break the unspoken rule." Gale nods his head slightly. I have to break the eye contact and look down hoping to hid any emotion from my face before he can read it.

"It was you." He grabs my chin and pulls my face to look at him. "When I broke the rule, it was because of you."

I can't help but let a slow tear fall down my face. Gale doesn't let it slide far because his thumb catches it.

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" I ask.

"I just did." He says with a laugh and I let out a chuckle.

"You have poor timing." I laugh.

"I know." He pulls my head onto his chest. He places a kiss on the top of my head.

Gale and I were too distracted with our confessions to notice the countdown start.
