big crimson letters on the school's papers. a picture of a pretty girl next to a pretty boy, both arms around each other, smiling wide, with dreamy eyes,
you'd think they were

happy sappy lovers just
like in an 80's movie where he'd walk her home, hold
her hand and kiss her when
the stars were watching.

no.

we were not happy lovers.

definitely not highschool sweethearts.

your heart was neither sweet or soft. it was the type that would still be stuck to your fingertips even after you had tried to wash it away and one you couldn't quite scrape out from beneath your fingernails.

no.

it was sweet. sweet enough to rot 4 year olds teeth and watch them cry in their mother's knit sweater arms after looking in mirrors they could hardly reach while brushing their teeth with peppermint and gasping when they found several black holes.

rotten lips from fruity lip-glosses,
we never kissed even when
the stars were watching.

stomping over my baby yellow
soul with your
clickety clack Valentino heels.

today you placed your palms on my knees and told me
you never loved me.
and i ripped the roots of poison ivy from my skin when you walked away with your hair swish swoshing, catching sun rays between strands.

((i'm glad i took my heart back))
