Chapter 14

"So what's first? We find the map or do we already have the map?" With the Chrome Killer in my right hand, I swiped at several plants and mosquitoes, swearing when one bit me in the arm only to watch it fall off dead. Well then, whatever it sucked probably was not healthy for it. I looked at my skin where it'd been bitten and looked at a curious black liquid as it covered the wound and then... gone. How come I never noticed this before?!

"We find it. I know where it is, but that's about an hours walk away, half an hour of running but neither you nor Sora have the endurance." So machine's have endurance levels too. That's another new thing. And the large machete made out of Takeyama's arm, which apparently was part of his 'unique' set of moves. I was a little more interested in Eve's because she had guns but his weapons were still... ok.

"Then why don't we do that Defense mode thing... what was it called? Ka-" Eve bonked me on the back of my head, sending a glare my way when I turned to face her. Well, ok then. No naming battle/defense modes unless your going to use them.

"Because that'll attract the wrong attention. You do know of the wildlife here, right?"

I huffed my chest out, frowning. "Of course I do! I know all there is to know about Shin-En and what surrounds it!" Just as I'd said that, something growled from not too far away. I froze in my steps to look behind me but Eve pushed me on, a smirk on those wide lips. Takeyama chuckled from ahead, shaking his head.

"If you know so much, then tell me what that growl back there just was?" When I stayed silent, he laughed louder. "That, my friend is a Kiri-Kirir, a very dangerous, carnivorous animal. Of course, the only one in danger of that would be Sora and she's perfectly capable of protecting herself with that Voice of hers, right Sora." She answered with a very offensive finger back to all of us, and I didn't have to be a Dorei to know she'd probably said the word too. Why was the girl in such a bad mood if we were going back to the so called sanctuary?

I decided to ask Eve, who was mellow enough to not go for my head. She smirked, showing a pair of fangs I hadn't noticed before. "She hates it there because everyone treats her like the princess she is. Oh, it's also because she has Takashi waiting for her. Poor girl has an actual knight in shining armor. But he's such an ass! If only I could pulverize him and maybe shoot him to the stars-"

One word out of everything she said didn't make sense to me as I turned to face Eve. "St... sta-rs?" The word was alien to me, had no real meaning. What did it mean? "What- what is that?"

Eve gave me a weird look before understanding flashed across her features. "I forgot. They don't teach you about the humans above, do they? Well, think of the lights that you see in the ceiling everyday and shrink them to a microscopic size." I did so in my minds eye, seeing nothing but a tiny ball of light in pure black. "It's like that, surrounded by a black sky, and full of more than a hundred million of those small lights. Those are called stars," she explained, a dreamy look in her eyes. I studied that expression, confused. How could a small light like that amaze a girl like her? If anything, those... 'stars' should be amazed by her.
