"How can I help you?" She asks.
I clear my throat before speaking. "Hi, I'm Diana Thompson. I scheduled an appointment to meet with Dr. Sheppard today."
She nods, looking at her computer then back at me. "Okay, just sit down in the waiting room and he'll be right with you."
Mumbling an "Okay" I went into the waiting room and sat down. The waiting room was filled with pregnant women and children playing. Across from me was a tiny black wooden coffee table holding health magazines. Underneath it was a dull grey carpet that covered the whole room. A television sat in the front displaying boring commercials.
I just tap my feet impatiently, waiting for my name to be called. A toddler cries throwing a tantrum and the mother rolls her eyes before placing a pacifier in her child's mouth. The child spits out the pacifier and cries louder.
Would I be like that as a mother?
Would my child cry so much?
How do you even get a toddler to stop crying?
The toddler's eyes focus in on the teddy bear under the chair. The mother ignores her and continues to type on her phone.
Seriously?
Having enough of hearing the toddlers cry. I stand up and walk towards her. Picking up the bear from under the chair, I hand it to her. The toddler instantly stops crying and starts playing with the bear. Rolling my eyes at the mother, (who just stares at me), I walk back to my seat.
It seems like hours for them to call my name. "Ms. Thompson, Dr. Sheppard will see you now."
Gathering my things, I follow the nurse. She guides me into a room, telling me to lay on the bed, before stepping out. It was a typical hospital room, small yet functional. Someone knocks on the door before opening it up.
Dr. Sheppard walks into the room with a smile on his face. "You leave for only a year, then come back pregnant." Is the first thing he says.
I chuckle slightly. He always was funny. "Yeah, well life takes its own turn in events."
He pulls me into a hug. "I've missed you, you know. Once you stopped working at the hospital I had no one to annoy."
My eyes roll. "Then it's a good thing I left. Why'd you quit working at the hospital?"
He puts some latex gloves on. "Well, I got tired of working at the hospital and just wanted to do my own thing. So then I got the idea of opening up this clinic."
I nod, laying back on the bed. "That's great Keith."
He smiles. "I know. Pull your shirt up for me please." I do as he says, and watches as he spreads a gel on my belly. Chill's surface in my body, from the coldness. He rubs the transducer over my belly and points to the screen of the small monitor. "And that's your baby." Looking at the screen all I saw was a big blob.
That's a baby?
"Why is it so big?"
Keith frowns at the screen, moving the transducer more up. He sighs in relief after a second. "Looks likes you have two babies."
"What? Two of them?" Shocked is an understatement.
Welp goodbye body.
"Sure do hope those are tears of joy." Kieth comments.
I wipe my eyes, not sure when I started crying. "I'm not ready for a baby. Let alone two." I say, truthfully. "I'm just so overwhelmed."
Keith looks over at me. "That's normal. Every first mother to be is overwhelmed when they found out they're pregnant. Even the ones that have it all planned out." He says. "I heard about what happened to Skyler and I know it's taking a huge toll on you. I wish I could've made it to the funeral."
