SUMMER SPENT THE ENTIRETY OF HER DAY WISHING IT WAS OVER. That she wouldn't have to put up with any more whispers and pointed looks about her outburst this morning. Or that she wouldn't have to double-check every corner before turning it to avoid bumping into Steve and Nancy.
Even Jonathan had disappeared on her during lunch without so much as an inkling as to where he was going, and so she was left to spend it alone hiding out in the library. She had been pondering over the idea that perhaps she had brought all of this upon herself - if everything would be different had she just admitted to Steve, and herself, that she did in fact love him.
If she hadn't freaked out and left him last night then maybe she would've been the one he was carelessly kissing in the hallways.
It was a hard thing to process, but she knew now that whatever they had, or could've had, was nothing more than a distant dream. And the worst part was that Summer knew there was no way for them to get back to how things used to be.
The realisation that she had potentially lost her best friend doesn't completely hit until the end of the day. Until there were only a few minutes left of class and then she could go home. Instead, she sits there, watching as the seconds pass by, and her heart plummets in her chest.
The idea of Steve no longer being a part of her life scared her to death, but with only minutes left of class, she wasn't going to let anyone see her cry for the second time that day.
Biting her tongue, she remains silent as she packs up her books, preparing herself to race out the door the second the bell rings. And when it does, she bypasses everyone, ignoring her teacher calling after them and leaves.
The last thing she needed was for anyone to witness how torn up she truly was over the entire thing. Mostly because she knew it would get back to Steve in a matter of minutes.
Summer doesn't stop for anything as she reaches the bike rack and retrieves her own before pedalling off through the car park, wanting to put as much distance between her and the school as possible. Though when she notices that a group of people had formed near Jonathan's car, it certainly arouses her curiosity.
She wasn't even aware that Jonathan was still at school with how quickly he had run off at lunch. She just assumed that he had forgotten he had somewhere to be, perhaps helping Joyce or something to do with finding Will.
Pushing through the sparse crowd, she drops her bike when she sees her friend surrounded by Steve, Tommy, Carol, Nancy and Nicole - all five of them staring with narrowed eyes as if he were some kind of monster.
At first glance, Summer doesn't notice Jonathan's camera, his most prized possession, barely balancing on the palm of Steve's hand. But when she does, she rushes towards him and tries to grab it. The tip of her fingers grazes the device, but Steve's too quick for her and raises his arm up well above her head.
