Chapter 9

Soon enough, it's Friday - last period of school. I impatiently squirm in my seat, my shoes, squeaking against the floor. I stare at the clock, not paying attention to anything Mr. Fairlock has to say about math. 2 more minutes. I tap my foot on the floor and shift around in my seat. Mr. Fairlock looks over and I quickly move my head down to my notebook, pretending to take notes. He ignores me then continues with his lesson. I stare at the clock again. 1 minute. 30 seconds. 10 seconds. 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

As soon as that bells goes off, I am up and out of the door, finally the first to be out of class. Students trample behind me in a herd, stumbling over each other. I head to my locker and whip out my backpack, shoving pencils, books, and, god who knows what else, into it. I slam the locker door shut and burst through the front entrance, outside.

I wait by the curb for Josh, who said he'd meet me here. I wait, looking down at my outfit. I didn't dress up like most girls do on their first date, even though I had no clue where he'd take me. I was wearing my new shoes, ripped jeans and an old MCR shirt. It make me look like a wreck and I wish I had worn my leather jacket. Suddenly, a black sports car pulls up to me, making me lose my train of thought. Joshua rolls down the windows and waves at me.

"Hey, Erica," His voice is smooth. "Ready?"

I nod and hop into the front seat. The inside of the car is just as nice as it is on the outside. Clean, leather seats and a rear-view camera. The radio station is playing, and I am thankful that the noise isn't blasting loud, like Lilan would have it.

"Okay, bad boy." I say. "Where are you gonna take me?"

"Hm... Before I tell you, put this on." He hands me a blindfold. "It's a surprise, so I don't want you to see where I'm taking you."

"I don't know... You could be an axe murderer." I tease.

"But what if I'm not?" God, his crooked smile is fucking cute.

"But what if you are?" I lift an eyebrow.

He laughs. "Just put it on."

I take the blindfold from him and tie is around my head, over my eyes. A few minutes later, I feel the car lurch forward at high speed. I don't know how much time has passed... 20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour? I try my best to see through the blindfold, but I see nothing. A couple seconds later, the car suddenly stops and I hurl forward, slamming myself against the dashboard.

"Ouch." I wince from the minor pain.

"Hehe, sorry." He replies.

"Can I take this thing off now?"

"Just let me get the chainsaw first..."

"Haha. I'm kidding. Yeah, you can take it off."

I slide the strip of fabric from my head and look around. I know this place and a flood of memories of my perfect childhood rush through my mind. He's taken me to the town carnival.

It may seem like just a carnival with rides and booths and games. Not to me. I remember my sister, my mom, my dad - all so happy to be together. My sister's smile when she won one of the games, the look on my mom's face after that rollercoaster. All these memories are so happy, yet, they make me feel empty inside.

"Erica...Erica?" I snap back to reality to see Josh staring into my eyes.

"Sorry. What is it?"

"Are you okay?"

"Why would I not be?"

"I don't know. For a moment you looked - uh, nevermind." He turns his head away.
