"just why do we have to get lost again?"
i groan in frustration
and kick at the piece of branch
i come across on the jungle pathway
"relax
we shouldn't have gotten that far from our cabin"
jeongguk replies, looking through his phone
"stop googling"
"how to find the way out when you're lost
in the middle of the woods"
he reads out
i sigh tiredly
why am i stuck with this kid again
"forget it there's no signal in here"
"oh look there's something over there!"
my sudden shout makes his shoulders jolt
and his phone nearly slips out of his fingers
he's lucky he has quick reflexes
"that looks like a"
he squints his eyes
eyebrows furrowing until he stares in disbelief
"an old abandoned house, nice
wasn't there something like that on your list?
let's just skip #7 and do your
#8 while we're out here"
"i..."
wait a minute
"i meant one in an amusement park
not a literal haunted house—"
"come along now"
he pulls me by the arm like an excited kid
the firewood that we collected
now falling to the ground in a messy heap
"hey we can't just"
i pause as we enter the front yard
"you're a devil
we don't even know if it's really haunted"
my excuses are lame, i know
but what he's doing now is
absolutely ridiculous
"exactly" he says stubbornly
"even if there are ghosts inside
they'll be blown away by my
heavenly visuals"
is he serious?
because the urge to hit him square
in his cocky face is reeling in me
"you have got to be kidding me"
i comment as he pushes the main door open
we step inside quietly
"heol" he gapes
the house consists of two stories
and the floor is surprisingly clean
although a bit dusty here and there
we go down a hallway, peep into a room
see an old dusty piano
which jeongguk starts to play to test the keys
and then suddenly there's a
loud bang from the ceiling
causing a shriek to come out of my mouth
my throat stings
i have had enough
enough
"JEON JEONGGUK
I AM LEAVING THIS PLACE!"
he pulls me back by my sleeve
(that jerk)
and leads me upstairs
how is he still not afraid?
"heol look at this"
he picks up a doll from the ground
and i stare at him with eyes of disbelief
he turns on his phone's flashlight
and points it towards me to see better
and that is when his eyes widen
in fear?
in awe?
i spin around
only to have my heart fall
to the bottom of my stomach
when i see a dark figure hovering
at the corner of the room
the lights above us begin to flicker
"holy sh-"
jeongguk begins
since i value my life
i do the only thing i can
"run you idiot
RUN"
and that's how jeongguk swore
to never step into a damned haunted house
ever again
well
at least before we find out that
the dark figure was the
forest ranger from earlier
apparently he lives here
which explains
the unfixed lights that keeps flickering
"you kids should stick to your part of the woods
it's dangerous here"
the ranger says once we finally make it outside
and i'm not swayed by it
insisting that he might be a sly ghost
trying to trick us
and after jeongguk asks
some very personal questions
he confirms that he in fact
is not a ghost
then we break down into fits of sobs and laughter
clutching our stomachs and struggling to breathe
well
there goes my dumbest, #8
but certainly not the one i will ever regret
