Remember Me…Your Girlfriend?
I look down at my schedule. English Literature.
I’ve never been that good in that subject, mostly because we have to stand in front of the class and talk about some random author or poet. And I’m not good at talking to a crowd, I get very nervous.
I sigh. I really want to skip.
I take a deep breath and look at Matthew.
“Sorry to ask you this…but have you seen Alexis?” He asks, not really looking at me but at my open locker door.
“No, Matthew. I haven’t.” I answer dryly and turn back to my locker and shuffle through it to look like I’m too busy to look at him. Please leave, please leave.
He was about to walk away, but then turns back around, “One question.”
I stay silent, since I can’t stand the sight of him. It just reminds me that the old Matthew is gone.
“I know that you’re mad and everything, but why won’t you call me Matt anymore? You are the only person that actually ever called me that.” He says softly, sounding…sad?
“Because you’re not Matt.” I shut my locker door and walk past him.
“What?” Matthew asks catching up, stopping in front of me so I have to stop. “What makes you think I’ve changed?”
The real Matt would not have done what you did to me. “I don’t want to talk.” Is all I say and try to walk around him, but he won’t let me. He just takes a step sideways, making me stop again.
I don’t look at him but at a ripped piece of paper that is lying on the floor.
“Look at you!” I yell, because I did not want to hear him say Nessie. “I don’t know who you are anymore.” I say a little quieter because people were staring.
Everyone most probably knew the story. Everyone knew that Matt and I have been together three years ago and now everyone knows that Matthew and Alexis are dating. It is humiliating on my side because I look like the idiot. The girl that got dumped by Matthew Romero because he’s so hot now and plain Vanessa Pierce just doesn’t suit his new lifestyle anymore.
“So I’ve changed on the outside, big deal. What is really your problem?” Matthew was getting mad at me.
How dare he ask that? How dare he cheat and ask me that?
I am about to lift my head and say something, but Matthew was faster, “You know what? Whatever, it doesn’t matter. You moving was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.”
Those words stung so badly I slapped him with all the hurt that has been building up from the minute I found out that he and Alexis have been together behind my back.
My slap had such and impact that his whole head literally tuned to the right. He touched his cheek and look at me with such surprise, that I couldn’t take it anymore and just hurried away. This time, he didn’t stop me.
Student were looking at me as I ran past them, so I just opened the nearest Janitor closet and slipped inside, throwing my bag down in frustration and slipped down to the floor, letting the tears flow freely.
I thought I could handle anything he would say to me. But not that. That was just plain mean. No one deserves to be told that.
