ACT II

SCENE II

[Setting: A little bit off from the basketball court. QUINN's friends had left him after their game, allowing him to meet CODY who was sitting on the stairway from view. It was late in the evening, and the two boys decided to walk home together.]

QUINN: (Looks over at Cody) You look tired.

CODY: Yeah. (Smiles.)

Silence.

[The two continued to walk together towards CODY's street that was a little way before the street QUINN's home was in. The only thing that filled the silent void was the sound of the cars driving past them, and the sound of their own shoes on the concrete pavement.]

QUINN: (Laughs when CODY let out a small squeak at the sight of a rat.)

QUINN: It's just a rat. It's afraid of you.

CODY: (Holds self as he shakes his head.) No. I don't care.

QUINN: (Laughs.)

CODY: I feel embarrassed for squeaking now. (Laughs.)

QUINN: It's okay, it's cute.

CODY: (Turns to the taller boy in the dark before looking away.)

[Cody was glad that QUINN couldn't really see him in the moonlight because his face was getting hot. He wondered if all the little compliments QUINN gave him were intentional - and that if they were what were they for? Were they to tease him, or genuinely complement him?]

QUINN: (Cocks head to the side.) What's wrong?

CODY: (Blinks, realizing that he'd stopped walking.) Nothing. (Shakes head, making his long dark hair bounce with the movement.)

QUINN: (Raises a brow as the continued to walk.) Are you sure?

CODY: (Face grows warm in embarrassment.) Yeah.

QUINN: (Shakes his head but doesn't say anything afterward.)

[They got to CODY's house. It was a small flat at the beginning of one of the roads. The lights were off, and QUINN could hear CODY let out an audible sigh. CODY really didn't like going home when his family members were awake.]

CODY: See you then—

CODY: (Turns when he feels QUINN take a hold of his hand.)

QUINN: Wait. (Releases CODY's hand.) I have something to tell you.

CODY: (Frowns a bit.) What is it?

QUINN: (Sighs.)

[CODY's heart began to beat faster as he wondered whether QUINN didn't want to be friends anymore. Their friendship was too good to be true-]

QUINN: Do you want to go out sometime, like downtown to eat or watch a movie?

CODY: (Blinks) What?

[QUINN could feel the confidence drain out of his pores, but he wasn't backing down now.]

QUINN: Do you want to go on a date with me?

CODY: (Looks down at his worn-out tennis shoes.)

QUINN: You can say no. I just like you a lot, and I thought I'd ask you instead of keeping quiet about it—

CODY: Okay.

QUINN: (Smiles.) You won't regret saying yes, I promise. I'll tell you where we're going tomorrow. Does that sound okay?

CODY: Yeah. (Looks up to smile at QUINN.)

[The two boys smiled at each other in the dimly lit street, none of them wanting to pathways.]

CODY: I-I should be going.

QUINN: Yeah. (Laughs.) See you tomorrow.

CODY: (Smiles before turning and walking away.)

[QUINN watched the small boy get into his house, and he waited by the pavement for a while before turning away and heading back home. The smile on his face didn't disappear, and his sister poked fun at him for it but he didn't care — Cody had said yes.]

Curtains fall.
