They answered the phone on the third ring.
"Prince Lancelin, what a pleasant surprise!" Came the hoarse voice of the woman who was in charge of the New York division of the Hunters Council. "To what do I own this pleasure?"
"You remember that there had been a public shooing outside my building last month?" I asked Tiara Cornwell.
"Yes," she said. "I remember you getting shot. Why?"
"The bullet traces back to someone from your unit."
"Impossible!" Her voice sounded rougher than usual. "My squadron will never go against my orders!"
"Well, someone has and if you don't want this to turn into a big issue, do something about it." I told her. "I'll have my people send you the image of the man responsible tomorrow morning."
"I'll be expecting."
We hung up the phone and I stared at the soundless sea as several thoughts ran through my mind. Why would a hunter suddenly attack me without any cause or reason? It was a good thing that they didn't hit any of the vital organs or I would've taken a Hell lot longer to heal.
But what worried me was how close Sana had been to me when we were getting out of the office. If she hadn't stopped by the reception, she might have been the one to get shot-
Sanaya's panicked voice reached me at that instance and I rushed inside my room to find her at my door, looking disheveled and shaken.
When I returned to our suite, it was well past midnight and Lance was nowhere in sight.
"Lance?" I called out before knocking on the door, but when no one answered, I used my key to enter. Thankfully, I hadn't forgotten to take my key with me when I went out to give the Eustis brothers some space, or I would have had to wake up the management staff to get the spare key.
"Lance!" I called out again once I was in the living area, but once again, there was no answer.
A sudden disturbing thought entered my mind and I felt fear rise at the back of my mind.
I haven't fed in the last three weeks.
What did that mean for an Incubus? Lance never told me anything! How long can an Incubus go without...feeding? And what happened if they didn't feed?
"Lance?" This time my voice sounded panicked as I ran towards his room and turned the doorknob. Locked.
How can he bloody lock his room at this moment?
I pressed my ear on the door to hear any noises from the other side. But there was nothing. Maybe he was in the bathroom and couldn't hear my voice? But something told me that wasn't the case. I debated calling for help, but what if people found out about him? Maybe I could call Ace, but unless he can fly, he'd never be able to get here in time.
I looked down at my hands at the key I was holding. "Shit! Why didn't I think about this before!" I cursed myself before entering the digital key in the slot and the door unlocked.
"Lance?" I called again, this time louder and turned the lights on in the room...to find the balcony door open.
"Sanaya?" Lance finally emerged from the balcony, wearing a bathrobe with his cell phone in hand, his dark hair draped over his forehead, wet from his shower.
I sagged against the wall as relief crashed through me, and then I was laughing like a manic as I slid down the wall to sit on the floor.
"Sana? Are you alright?" Lance looked a little worried as he came to stand in front of me. "Sana?"
