starring: james rolleston, taika waititi, rachel house
genre: drama, comedy
summary: a new zealand youth finds that his father is a far cry from the heroic adventurer he's imagined the man to be.
why i like it: this is such a good movie!!! as i've mentioned already, taika waititi is one of my all time favourite directors and this was one of his first full length pictures. he writes the screenplay for it and starred as boy's father, alamein (who is an incredible character btw). taika is so FUCKING TALENTED AND AMAZING AND WONDERFUL I LOVE HIM and this film only justifies my reasoning more. the story is so heartwarming as well as heartbreaking, and the balance between light and darkness is perfect. it is a story that needs to be recognised more, as it shows how a young boy deals with his absentee father in a struggling community, trying to help raise his little brother who is learning about how he killed his mother during childbirth. it made me bawl in this one specific scene which i'm not gonna say, but it was so beautiful there were definitely tears.
