The ruthless, Butterfly Queen stared down the monster king with a certain vengeance seething from her body. He had never seen anyone with such an anger towards a race of creatures or people, with one exception. Toffee. But Toffee had a reason - an endearing one - to hate all Mewmen. Or, at least those guilty of hurting innocents.
"But you don't know that." The monster king stated. He didn't know her reasoning, but it couldn't be one that justified her hatred.
"Septarians are bloodthirsty. They lust for war and death to all Mewmen..." The Queen trailed off, but only for a moment, "I've seen it for myself."
The Butterfly Queen's heart ached as the memories began pouring back. A man and a Septarian with blue skin - much like Toffee's - and a fight that lasted for hours; only for the Septarian to come out on top. She shook the memory away like it was a lasting taste of bile on her tongue.
For a moment the monster king stayed silent, giving his own thoughts to the Queen's reply. "It's true, Septarians are raised to be fighters; to be ruthless and uncaring towards their enemies... But they would never kill another living being without good reason." The monster king stopped to let his statement sink into the Queen's mind, then continued when he felt the time was right, "Whatever could have happened to you?"
The Queen turned her glare onto the king, the vengeance aura around her steadily growing until it filled the room. It was tangible and thicker than the fog from the swamp.
"What could have happened to me..? What could have happened to me?" She gave a short sarcastic chuckle, "I fell in love, with a mewman. He was such an able warrior and good man. What he got, he didn't deserve..."
"Before the war between monsters and Mewmen started, there were two groups of Septarian-led scout parties that arrived just outside the Mewnian border. Troops were sent out to simply watch the monsters activity, and my lover happened to be the leader of the Butterfly troops. He said he would return... And return he did. Carried along by a Septarian, with blue skin, who demanded us Mewmen to give his people back their land - otherwise he would..." That is where the Queen ended her story. It pained her to relive the memory; the constant nightmare that plauged her dreams to the point she never wanted to sleep again.
Though the monster king could not see the Queen's pain, he could tell that the story was true. The reason she said the name of the reptilian race like the word was venom in her throat was clear and reasonable, to a fault. She couldn't blame all of them for the mistake of one.
"My... Condolences, your Highness, but you cannot condemn all for the mistake of one... And you cannot deny your daughter true love, as it was denied for you."
This caused the Queen's heart to drop deep into her stomach. "Your general and my daughter are NOT in love." She snarled, "They are only as close as I wish them to be."
"That's where you're wrong," The monster king gestured towards the window and stood to see out of it. He watched as Toffee and Elara laughed and made merry with each other, a state he had never seen his stoic general in. It was love, as plain as the sky is blue. "Look at them. They're happy together; much like you and your lover were, I imagine-" Before the king could say another word, Queen Butterfly stood, stomped over to the window and hit it flatly with the palm of her hand. The sound of her skin violently striking the glass echoed through the room like a lingering threat.
"Toffee and Elara are NOT in love. Never will be - and that is final."
The king only sighed, shaking his head in disbelief. "As you wish, your Highness."
"But there is one thing you should know..."
"What?" The Queen snarled once again.
"If Toffee and Elara were to marry, the peace treaty would hold more weight for both Mewmen and Monsters."
"Out of the question," She spoke hastily, knowing her answer before the statement had even left the king's mouth, "I won't let my daughter be known as the repeat of Eclipsa."
Again, the monster king let a sigh escape through his lips. He knew very well the story of Eclipsa. She was a Butterfly princess who, while married to a mewman prince, fled the kingdom with a monster, claiming to be in love with him. After she married the monster, however, Eclipsa was never heard from again. Likely captured by the magic high counsel, but no one really knew for sure; except for the Butterfly family of course.
"Times are beginning to change. Perhaps Mewni wouldn't condemn such a marriage if it was done correctly and in true ceremony."
The Queen would not allow the gift of silence to let the idea sink in, she had had enough of the king's boldness.
"My decision is final, my daughter will never marry a monster - especially not a vile Septarian."
And with that the Queen stood, nodding sarcastic appreciation towards the monster king and turning to storm out of the room. She only turned back before she had left through the giant double doors to speak with the king like he had commited treason.
"I hope you enjoyed the hospitality. It is the last you will see until the ball, dear King." Then she whipped back around and left the room, the doors swinging back behind her with a thud.
The monster king honestly felt sorry for Mewni. Their Queen was stuck in her own ways, and slowly, but surely, passing on those ways to her two daughters. Or, at least the youngest princess. He looked back out the window towards Toffee and Elara, who had stopped their walk to sit on the side of the fountain. in Elara's eyes, the king saw something better. A Queen who would do good for Mewni, unlike her own mother. He only hoped that Elara - and maybe Toffee - could become King and Queen in the future. But hope was all he had.
Soon the butler came in, trying to usher the monster king out of the drawing room. The king obliged, knowing it was an order from the Queen, and followed the butler out.
"I have been told to collect your General. Wait here while I do so." The butler spoke, bowing lowly, and leaving the monster king alone in the front room of the palace.
**Well, well, well look who's finally back :P I'm honestly glad to be writing again, it's been a really long time. But, just so you all know. I've re-written chapter 8, as I said I was going to. and then decided to also post chapter 9 of this wonderful story. As some of you know, my original plans for this story were changed, since chapter 8 didn't really turn out so well the first time. So, all this time that I've been MIA, I have revised my original brainstorm of this story. Hopefully it will all turn out well as I continue to write, since this story is really just one-shotted chapters all linked together, and I really hope you enjoy this super long-awaited chapter! Stay toasty, and don't forget to vote, comment, and tell me what you think about the direction I've turned this story! :) Love you guys, thanks for all the continuous support and I will see you all very soon!**
