You Can Trust Me

Jason began creeping towards the game room door.

"Jason, no, don't!"

Jason ignored Stephanie's protests and swung open the door, peering outside.

"Oh, dammit."

Matt was laying on the floor in the hallway, passed out.

"It's almost like that man wanted us to see him. He was in the dining room when we left."

Jason heard footsteps coming down the hallway, and slammed the door shut.

"Get back!"

Steph quickly backed up to the couch and Jason hid beside the door.

BANG

The door swung open and the man walked in.

Jason jumped out from behind the door and punched the man in the back of the head, sending him flying into the wall.

"Stay away from her!"

"Jason, good to see you again."

"What do you mean? I've never seen you before! Unless you count a few minutes ago when you were holding a knife to my throat!"

"Oh, we have so much more history than that."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, we're brothers."

Jason froze.

"Nice try. I have no siblings."

"Yeah, I know it sounds crazy. But it's true. We're half-brothers, but we never knew each-other."

"Okay. So you're not only psychotic but you're also a terrible liar. Make up something believable next time."

"Y'know, our dad would come visit me from time to time. When I was sixteen, I found a photo of you in his car. I noticed how much you looked like him and me, and I asked him who it was. He came clean that the reason he never came to see me before I was twelve was that he never even knew I existed until my mom recognized him on the street one day, and he was too busy caring for his wife and other son to visit much after that."

"Do you rehearse this bullshit?" Jason asked, clenching his fists.

"My dad never had a picture of me in his car."

"Did you ever look in the back of the glove compartment?"

"No! But I think my own father would have told me I had a brother!"

"Relax. It's not like he cheated on your mom or anything, I was born before he even met her."

"That is not the point!"

"Imagine my surprise when, ten years later, I saw the same boy in the picture on GTLive. A show that I used to love before Matthew started paying more attention to his wife than his work. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone; resolve the Stephanie problem, and find my own brother, who could help me carry out that task."

"I'd never help you! Stephanie is my friend!"

"But I'm your brother. You can trust me."

"Jason, he's obviously lying!" Steph shouted.

"Or is she?" the man piped back up.

Jason's fists slowly began to drop.

"Okay. If you are my brother, you could never hurt a friend of mine."

"Well, if you come with me, I won't. I'll leave peacefully, without hurting anyone."

"Why do you want me to come with you?"
