Hoping and praying that Anna would say, you, I give her a look of anticipation. No. I mentally shake my head. What if Melissa likes someone else and not me?
Ouch. The thought of her liking someone else just breaks my heart like a fragile porcelain doll. My breath is shortening, not literally, but I just can't breathe with the anticipation.
"I don't know, Dani," Anna speaks, giving me relief but with unanswered questions.
"I need to see her and talk to her, Anna. This is very important," I beg. "Where can I likely find her?
Anna looks down and thinks, "I don't know. Probably, she's playing tennis or jogging in the park, or on the school's rooftop or at home or... watching half-naked guys play basketball."
I give her an inquisitive look.
"She's friends with those guys."
Playing tennis does not help Melissa think. Neither is jogging. The school's rooftop is boring, she loathes plain and simple places. I'm pretty sure she hasn't gone home, especially when her dad is around.
Okay. She is definitely watching half-naked guys play basketball because they don't bother her at all. She's probably thinking about something while watching them. "Okay! Thanks!" I hurriedly walk home and go looking for naked guys who basketball in the area.
While walking, I spot a familiar convertible parked near an open basketball court. That's definitely Melissa's. I walk fast towards the court and I see her, just sitting on a bench, legs crossed, looking hot, hair pulled back. She is just alone, no half-naked men running around. She looks down, just staring at her fingers, thinking. I stand a distance from her, watching her like a stalker.
Then, these voices in my head keep popping in...
Your essay... it sounds like you're... in love with yourself.
Every time Melissa likes or falls in love with someone, she disappears.
You... you make my day. I don't know why I'm saying this, but you complete my day.
I love you, Dani, for reals.
"Melissa..." I say softly, walking towards her.
She startles the instant she sees my face, "How the hell did you find me here?"
I look intently at her with a concerned face, "Can we talk, please?"
"Stop looking at me! Why are you looking at me?!" she stands up and tries to stay away from me.
"I-I have eyes!" I say, trying to calm her down.
"Go away!" she shoos me like a dog. "Go away!"
I slowly watch her move as she attempts to stay away, drawing her hand in front of me.
"Your face annoys me!!!"
I furrow my brow, "Excuse me? My face is annoying? What's wrong with my face?!"
"Go away, Dani, or you will regret---"
"WHY?!" I yell at her, cutting her off. "WHY?! WHY DON'T YOU WANT TO SEE ME?! WHY ARE YOU AVOIDING ME?! YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART, MELISSA!!!"
"YOU'RE breaking my heart, Dani!!! You do this... this thing to me. I feel so strange! And... and... I don't understand!"
"What did I do to you?! I did nothing!"
"Exactly!" she yells at me, her eyes are beginning to get damp from tears. "You did nothing! You just stand there, being a pussy!"
I'm not a pussy. I look at her eyes again, with cuteness this time.
