Chapter 23
I walked slowly into the detention center. I really didn't know what was in store for me. How was I going to confront Sam? Would he tell me what I wanted to hear? Or would I be disappointed, and have no clue and no way to find out what happened to Lisa?
"Are you sure about this Zainab?" asked Yahya looking at the center and then at me.
I gave him a reassuring smile, and squeezed his hand.
"I'm more than sure, you guys need to stop freaking out so much," I whispered to him.
"This way," urged agent Harrison who was walking in front of us.
Since Sam was still underage. He was being held in the Juvenile detention center until his court hearing. I looked around the bleak building. It was scary knowing that the young kids in here; Had done things from stealing to actually killing someone. I silently walked between my brother and Yunus.
Young boys walked to and fro in their orange jumpsuits. I tried to not make eye contact. Some of these kids were just plain scary. It seemed as if we were walking endlessly. Finally, we came to an empty barren hallway.
Harrison came to an abrupt stop in front of a gray door.
"He is in there, how would you guys like to do this?" He asked looking at me and Yunus.
"I want to speak to him alone...if... that's possible," I said looking directly at the agent.
"Wait a minute Zainab..." hissed Yahya.
"Absolutely not," growled Yunus.
I choose to ignore them both and waited for the agent to reply.
I wanted to speak to him by myself for two reasons. One, I didn't want Yahya or Yunus, freaking out about every little thing. I knew Sam was going to say something that would make them mad. Second, I wanted the freedom of asking whatever I wanted. Which wouldn't be possible at all with those two in the room.
"Yes, you can speak to him alone. He is basically shackled to his chair, and the chair is cemented to the floor. We wanted to take all necessary precautions in case he was the killer. If by some miracle he gets out of the chair then he will get shocked by the chains around his legs. So there shouldn't be any harm," Harrison reassured Yunus and Yahya.
I nodded, the two men behind me calmed down a bit.
" All that isn't necessary, but whatever makes you guys feel better," I shrugged.
Yunus grumbled something from behind me. I choose to ignore it.
"If... by some chance, either Sam or I start shouting, don't interrupt, ok?" I said looking pointedly at Yunus.
Yunus and Yahya both nodded reluctantly.
"May I go in?" I asked looking at the three men around me
Harrison nodded unlocking the room for me. I gently pushed the door open and squeezed myself in...quickly closing it behind me. I turned to face Sam, but I was unable to recognize the person in front of me.
Sam's neat blond hair looked disheveled and long. He had bags under his eyes and a five o'clock shadow grazed his chin. He looked as if he had lost a lot of weight , it was hard to believe that the boy in front of me was our schools goalie for the varsity soccer team, and captain of the varsity hockey team. A heavy rock dropped to my stomach.
