Chapter 1: The Roommate

"This is the last of the boxes," the mover said, plopping the last box at my feet.

I gave him a smile, "Thank you so much, have a good day."

After giving him his money, he gave me a little nod and walked out of my new apartment.

This was the moment I've been dreading. Being alone, in my big empty apartment. I did not like being alone all that much, but it won't be too long. My roommate should be arriving sometime tomorrow. However, I really did not like being in a room full of boxes that I have to unpack - again, alone.

Sighing, I started to get to work. The last thing I wanted was my roommate to see all these boxes still packed and spewed on the floor, when they may have even more boxes of crap than I do.

I first started in my room, given that's where most of my belongings with be anyways.

After a few hours, I was finally settled. My room was complete, the living room was neat with a limited amount of my things, and some dishes I owned were placed in the kitchen.

I was about to order some food when I heard the door open.

"What the he-" I started to say, turning to whomever was standing at my door.

A guy around my age, therefore early twenties, was standing there. He had blond messy hair underneath his knitted beanie and his blue eyes stared at me, as if assessing every little detail on my body. He set both of his beat up duffle bags on the ground and said, "Hey, I'm Darian West. You're Audrey Holland I'm assuming?"

"Uh, yeah," I blinked blankly. I looked down at my phone, "I'm about to order some pizza, is that good with you?"

Darian smiled, "Pizza sounds great," he started to walk around the apartment, "Sorry I'm early, I decided I didn't want to wait until tomorrow to move in. My old place kind of sucked."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," I said, not knowing how to respond.

Darian shrugged, "It only sucked because my boyfriend and I broke up."

"Boyfriend?" I questioned, not realizing it came out as loudly as I intended. Oh God I'm such an idiot.

Darian sat down on the couch I got for free on Kijiji and chuckled, "Yes, I'm gay."

"I'm sorry if I was offensive by questioning you having a boyfriend - I am tired and had to take a moment," I rambled.

"It's okay, no offense taken," my roommate said kindly, "I'd be tired too if I set up this whole apartment myself."

I sat on the couch beside Darian, "Yeah, I'm not a fan of being alone, so setting up the apartment was my way of distraction."

Darian looked around and nodded his head, "I like the pillows, they're really soft."

I barked out a laugh, out of everything, he comments on the pillows, "Thanks, my sister picked them out for me as a house warming gift."

"I approve of your sister's taste."

"Good to know," I laughed softly, "So, what kind of pizza do you like?"

A few hours later, it was nearly midnight and I was officially beat. Groaning in slight pain because that unpacking was tiresome, I fell backwards onto my bed. Taking a few deep breaths, I decided I should Skype my boyfriend Noah to let him know I was settled and safe.

Fumbling around my new room, I located my laptop and powered up Skype. In a few minutes, Noah finally answered, "Audrey? Are you okay?"

I laughed lightly, "I'm fine, Noah, I just finished unpacking. What have you been up to?"

"Nothing, just been waiting to hear from you," Noah whined, giving me a puppy dog pout.

"Well, you're hearing from me now," I chuckled.

"I miss you," my boyfriend said after a moment of silence.

Hearing his vulnerable voice made my stomach drop. It was going to be hard being away from him for so long. Noah has been my boyfriend all throughout high school, being away from him for only a day was hurting my heart.

Biting back tears, I said, "I miss you too."

"Hey, it's okay, love," Noah said softly, "You're chasing your dreams. You are going to be the best damn writer the world has ever seen. Practically the next J.K Rowling."

A laugh erupted from my slight sob, "No one can surpass J.K Rowling, hun, but thank you."

"Well, I guess that's a goal you can work towards, something to keep you distracted from missing your super awesome boyfriend," he suggested, adding a wink at the end of his sentence.

I rolled my eyes, "Nice one, babe."

"I know. Anyways, did you meet your roomie yet?"

I nodded my head, "Yeah, he's nice. His name is Darian."

"He?" Noah said through his teeth.

I shifted uncomfortably on my bed, "Noah, it's fine. Darian is gay. Even if he wasn't, there wouldn't be anything to worry about. I love you and only you."

Noah nodded in understanding, "You should get some rest, Audrey. You had a long day," Noah said, "I love you."

"Yeah, I should get some sleep," I yawned, "I love you too."

The screen went dark and I sighed. Being away from him for school was going to kill me.

Anxiety was starting to arise just thinking about being away from him for who knows how long. But he can't come here, his school and family are back in Calgary, not to mention he doesn't have the money to come here and I don't have the money to support the both of us.

Toronto is where I need to be. I can't describe it, but I feel like I need to be here, not just for school, but for something bigger than that. Noah understands, however, it's still going to be hard on me and on him.

Thinking about my boyfriend, I started to drift into a peaceful sleep.
