Another Nightmare

"And remember, that's just a stream. A LIVE STREAM! Thanks for watching!"

Matthew Patrick let out a sigh and leaned back on the couch while Jason shut down the stream.

Matt was deep in thought when a voice interrupted his thoughts.

"You okay?"

Matt turned to see his wife, Stephanie sitting beside him on the couch.

"Yeah, I'm fine, Steph."

"Have you had any more nightmares recently?"

Matt cringed slightly as he was hit with a tidal wave of memories from the worst nightmare he'd ever had. It had been almost three months.

"No, not since that last one, the really intense one."

She smiled.

"Good."

Matt was telling the truth.

He hadn't had any more nightmares for almost three months now, but it still felt like he had. Every day, he was reminded of what he had felt in his nightmare as he watched everyone he loved die around him.

"Alright, Matt."

Matt looked up to see Chris.

"I'm heading home if that's okay."

Matt smiled.

"Of course. Good work today, bud."

"Bye, Chris!" Steph shouted as Chris left.

"I'm in the mood for some pizza. Anyone else?" Matt asked.

Steph and Jason agreed.

"I'll go pick it up." Jason volunteered, standing up.

"No, Jason, you've done enough today." said Steph, standing up and blocking his path.

"I can get it." said Jason, remaining defiant.

"Well, at least let me come with you and help. I'll drive you home and give you a pizza, then I'll bring one back here."

"You should probably stay here with Matthew, Steph. I'm sure he has a lot of work to do and could use some help."

"I'm fine." Matt piped up.

"Y'all can go."

Finally accepting defeat, Jason muttered a quick "Fine." and he and Steph left.

Now alone, Matthew went to his recording closet. He was recording a theory about ARMS, having streamed it on GTLive the day after his nightmare.

Matt sat down and put the laptop in his lap, pulling up his editing software. He started to record a voice segment.

"The truth is that if Min Min's arms really were made out of noodles, they would have a length of between-"

Matt heard the door open. His head shot up.

Steph and Jason couldn't be back yet.

Maybe someone had forgotten something.

Matt ended his recording and went to the door.

"Forget something?" he asked as he rounded the corner.

Matt froze.

He had expected to see Steph, Jason, or maybe Chris.

But he couldn't believe what he saw.

Standing there, in front of Matt, was the same man from his dream.

The one that had destroyed his life.

The man was holding a dart gun, but it didn't look like a normal dart gun. It was green and was emitting some kind of energy around it.

"No. You can't be real! I'm dreaming!"

Matt ran towards the man, hoping to grab the dart gun out of his hand.

ZAP

The gun was fired, not making the normal sound that a dart gun emits.

Matt looked down to see some kind of green dart lodged in his chest.

He fell to his knees, then blacked out.

"Matthew? Matthew, wake up!"

Matt woke with a start, sitting straight up in bed.

"Hey, hey, hey, it's just me."

Matt looked to his left to see his beautiful wife looking concerned.

"You were jerking around and yelling in your sleep." Stephanie informed him, her face wrinkling in concern for her beloved husband.

Matt was getting an odd feeling of déjà vu, almost as though he had experienced this before.

"Of course, it was all just a nightmare."

"Do you want to talk about it? You were yelling my name, over and over."

Matt was confused. Why would he be yelling her name? He hadn't in his dream, he had just been shot by the dart.

"It really didn't make any sense, Steph. I'm okay. Let's go back to sleep."

"Okay."

They pressed their lips together tightly for a brief moment, then pulled away.

"Goodnight, Steph."

"Goodnight, Matthew. I love you."

"I love you too."

Matt still felt that he had experienced this before, he just didn't know where.

In fact, when did he go to bed? Unless the entire day had been a dream. Matt groaned internally at the thought of having to play that rage game again, knowing that all his progress was for nothing.

Trying not to think about it, Matt settled down in bed, quickly falling asleep.
