How to break hearts Step 1: Sam Cortland

If Sam & Celaena had somehow escaped from Arobynn's grasp & forged their way to the Southern Continent . . .
Sam wouldn't have broken down the walls of Celaena Sardothien. No, he would have just loved her so hard that she would have taken them down for him. She would have made herself vulnerable to him until she realized that she was not too broken to love.
They would have had nights, endless nights, of curling up by the fire & reading books upon books. Not even talking, just sitting in separate chairs in separate worlds but feeling closer that they ever could have imagined. They would have been happy just holding hands while their wandered through a market.
Sam Cortland & Celaena Sardothien would be that couple who couldn't stop themselves from protecting innocent people getting cornered in alleys. They'd make their home open to women who they've noticed have too many bruises for it to be an accident, or to children who have lost their families. They'd do the small things that would matter in big ways for other people.
And yet . . .
One day, Celaena would wake up before Sam. She's look out her window & realize that the rising sun was being swallowed by some strange clouds on the horizon. And something in her would feel the pull of magic. Dark magic.
Something in her would recognize the hawk that suddenly shifted into a silver-haired Fae, who would begin yelling at her & at anyone who would listen. Yelling for them to run. She would trust that Fae for some reason she couldn't understand, & she & Sam would flee from the house.
Something in her would scream when Sam is stabbed through the heart by a swarm of soldiers who all wear these strange black rings. She would scream even more when the silver-haired Fae failed to hold up his shield of ice & wind, & he falls as well.
Something in her would unleash this fire that ripped through her, that growled with perfect destruction as it tore through her veins. She would feel her ears growing & elongating until she recognized the form she had tried to forget.
Something in her would fight back with this body & these flames. She would fight with vengeance in her heart, & she would fight so fiercely that her flames could be seen on the horizon from hundreds of miles away. But it would be too late. That fire would eventually be extinguished because she wouldn't know how to control it, & she too would fall to her knees.
Something in her would break as she felt the blood that flowed through the streets, as she smelled pure fear coursing through the air, as she heard the screams of the innocents, as she saw the world ending around her.
Something in her would know it was her fault.
