Prologue

Elizabeth stands at the bow of the ship singing a song about pirates. I can't help but smile as I join her. We've always be fascinated by pirates. Elizabeth suddenly gasps as she is spun around.

"Quiet missy. Cursed pirates sail these waters. You don't want to bring them down on us now do you?" Mr. Gibbs scolds her.

"That will be all Mr. Gibbs." Lieutenant Norrington's voice echoes through the fog.

"She was singing about pirates!" Mr. Gibbs hurries to justify himself. "Bad luck to be singing about pirates, with us mired in this unnatural fog. Mark my words." He warns.

"Consider them marked. On your way." Lieutenant Norrington replies with sarcasm dripping from his voice.

"Aye Lieutenant." Gibbs moves away. "It's bad luck to have a woman on board." He says as he passes. "Even a miniature one." He finishes muttering the last bit.

"I think it would be rather exciting to be a pirate." Elizabeth exclaims. I nod my head in agreement.

"Think again Miss Swann." Norrington steps forward so he's standing beside Elizabeth and I. "Vile and dissolute creatures, the lot of them. I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves. A short drop and a sudden stop." He smiles humorlessly. I gasp and Elizabeth looks at me confused. She then looks at Mr. Gibbs who takes his neck tie, pulls up and makes quite strangling sounds. Elizabeth gasps and steps closer to my skirts.

"Lieutenant Norrington." Daddy steps forward looking rather ridiculous in his bright red coat with his dark curly wig and hat. "I appreciate your fervor, but I'm concerned about the effect this subject will have upon my daughters." I roll my eyes.

"My apologies Governor Swann." Norrington walks away.

"Actually, we find it all fascinating." Elizabeth pipes up before I can stop her.

"Yes." Daddy looks at the both of us. "That's what concerns me. Isabella. A word if you please." Daddy says as he walks away from Elizabeth.

"Yes Daddy?" I ask falling into step with him.

"Isabella," Daddy stops. "when we arrive in Port Royal, I think it would be best if you were to attend the boarding school. It's not far." He rushes to reassure me.

"A boarding school?!" I gasp. "Daddy I'm only 12! What will Elizabeth do?"

"Your sister is 11. She can take care of herself." Daddy reminds me.

"Look! A boy! There's a boy!" Elizabeth suddenly shouts. "There's a boy in the water!" She leans over the railing to get a better look. Norrington rushes to the railing before shouting,

"Man overboard! Man the ropes." He orders. "Fetch a hook. Haul him aboard." The men pull a boy onto the deck. Norrington kneels beside the boy. "He's still breathing."

"Mary, Mother of God!" Gibbs gasps from his spot on the riggings. In the water a ship sits sinking while it burns.

"What happened here?" Daddy asks Norrington.

"Most likely the powder magazine. Merchant vessels run heavily armed." He explains.

"Lot of good it did them." Gibbs mutters. "Everyones thinking it, I'm just saying it." He announces louder. "Pirates!"

"There's no proof of that!" Daddy argues. "It was probably an accident." I look for Elizabeth and see her standing over the boy.

"Rouse the captain immediately." Norrington orders. "Heave to and take in sail. Launch the boats." A man picks up the boy moving him out of the way.

"Isabella, Elizabeth, I want you to accompany the boy. He'll be in your charge. Take care of him." Daddy says as Elizabeth and I move to where the boy lays. Elizabeth touches his hair. The boy wakes gasping for air, grabbing her wrist. I rush from behind Elizabeth.

"It's ok. My names Isabella Swann and this is my sister Elizabeth."

"Will Turner." The boy says between gasps.

"We're watching over you Will." Elizabeth reassures him. Will's head falls back down with exhaustion. Elizabeth picks up a necklace from around Will's neck. On a thin gold chain a gold token with a skull and triangle designs causes Elizabeth and myself to gasp. "You're a pirate!" Elizabeth looks at me fear in her eyes. I stretch out my hand gesturing for her to give me the necklace so I can hide it.

"Has he said anything?" Norrington's voice causes us to jump.

"His name's William Turner. That's all I found out." Elizabeth informs him.

"Take him below." Norrington orders. Elizabeth grabs the necklace from my hands and moves to the side of the ship. I follow Will below the deck.
