Well that's the question, isn't it? We'll make an attempt at answering that question for you.
Action stories are generally fast-paced. In fact, you might find the plot moving along at such a velocity you could be forgiven for thinking the writer was constantly chugging [insert name of branded energy drink here] whilst writing the story.
Epic fight scenes. This is another common aspect of an action story. Be it a skilled martial arts fight, a full-on battle between gladiators or some good old spontaneous brawls.
You might see extreme sports such as snowboarding or base-jumping, sky-diving, and BMXing or Moto-X feature heavily. In fact, if it's a sport showcased at the X-Games it's likely to feature in action works. That is not to say that other sports will not feature, of course! Parkour, or Free-Running, as seen in the District 13 movies, could well play a large part in such stories, too.
High-speed chases, this can be anything from running for your life on foot, a runaway train, to some juiced up muscle cars.
Action is most definitely a genre-breacher and stories of every genre from Sci-Fi to Romance, Historical Fiction to Fantasy, even genres like Chick-Lit and Humour are just as likely to feature a large amount of action.
And these are by far not the only elements to a good action story! These are just some examples!
