"Ruby," I turn to the sound of my name and see Ryan, my gorgeous boyfriend and father to my beautiful baby. I lean up on my tippy toes and wrap my arms around his neck. "I love you," he whispers as he leans in to kiss me gently, his hands resting on my hips.
"I love you too," I smile.
I turn, waking up as the sound of laughter travels up to my room. My door is ajar and I can hear voices from downstairs. I turn to go back asleep again but stop as I hear the voice of the person I have been dreaming about for months. My heart races and I hold my breath to hear him again. "Ryan," I whisper, a smile spreading across my face.
He's back. I can't believe it. He's actually back. My heart flutters with excitement at the thoughts of seeing him again after all this time.
"Your daddy's home," I say gently to my stomach.
I've dreamt about this day for months on end. The day Ryan comes home and I tell him that I'm pregnant. Each time I dream about it, it ends differently. I can only hope that in reality it ends the way I want it to.
I remember the day I found out I was pregnant. God, I was a mess. I was in my last few weeks of my final year in high school, I had loads of friends and I was happy, apart from the fact that I was missing one thing in my life, one particular person who was on the opposite side of the world, fighting for our country.
"Jas," I whisper to my best friend. We're sitting in Physics class together. There's only a few minutes left before school ends.
"Will you come to town with me after class, please?"
"Oooh," she squeals loudly, making everyone in the class turn to look at her, including the teacher.
"Is something wrong, Ms. Doyle?"
"No, sir. I just thought I seen a spider on my desk. It's all good now though, thanks for the concern," she replies cheekily as the class laughs. Our teacher chuckles and shakes his head at her antics. She turns to me. "Are we going shopping?"
"Um," I start. "Kinda."
"Kinda?" she asks, louder now as the bell has rung. She notices the worried look on my face. "Rubs, what's wrong?"
"I'll tell you in the car," I mumble.
"Pregnant!" she screeches. We're sitting in my car in the parking lot and I've just told her my suspicions. "How the hell could you be pregnant? Well, I know how, but I mean how? I mean, you never even told me you slept with someone! Who's the Daddy? Oh, let me guess. Is it one of the jocks? If it's Alan Ryder I'm gonna kill you! You know how much I want that boy."
"Jas," I said, trying to get her attention but she just keeps on rambling.
"I mean, have you seen him? He is so hot. He's just se-"
"It's Ryan," I say, cutting her off completely. She looks at me with her mouth wide open.
I chuckle to myself at the memory of Jas's reaction. Jasmine is my best girlfriend. Although she's away in University at the minute she's very supportive of me. She calls every few days asking for updates about her future niece. I'd be lost without her.
When I told her I was pregnant, I knew that she wouldn't abandon me. However, I never could have expected her to be as helpful and caring for me as she was. She deserves a medal for it. In the early months of my pregnancy, when I was struggling a bit, Jas was there for me. She'd research all about pregnancy and come over at weekends to cheer me up. Jas even went as far as having all these ideas to help me deal with my morning sickness, grumpiness and especially my increased appetite. She made me laugh when all I felt like doing was crying. I didn't think it was possible for us to become closer than we already where, but we did. The past few months has really strengthened our friendship.
