AUTHORS NOTE:

Lauren and Cole's mom, Gayle---------->

................................................................................................................................

I walked into Lauren's room with a massive grin on my face. The girls stood up and bowed at me.

"Hahaha, thank you, thank you!"

"That was so funny, and we didn't even see it from inside his room", Tayla said.

"Speaking of that", I started, "Why did you guys leave me there, alone?!"

Lauren and Tayla just looked at eachother, silently asking the other one to give me an answer.

"It was Lauren's idea!" Tayla blurted out. She was clearly just trying to save herself.

"What? Why would it be my idea?" Lauren looked shocked. I almost believed it, almost.

"Because you found her in Cole's room earlier so you thought it would be funny, and it was."

I just eyeballed the girls. At least I got to see his reaction, unlike them.

We decided to stop the pranks for the night, as Cole would probably be more aware now. I went downstairs to pour myself some water, and noticed a lady standing in the kitchen. I assumed she was their mom, as she had the same dark hair as them and she looked similar to the lady in the pictures by the stairs.  She looked up from the papers in her hand and smiled at me. "Hi, I'm Lauren and Cole's mom. You can call me Gayle, not Aunty Gayle, it makes me feel old", she smiled.

"Haha ok, I'm Kenzie."

"I heard someone scream upstairs earlier. I was going to come and check but then I heard you girls laughing. What were you guys up to?" Gayle asked.

I grinned, thinking of how Cole screamed. "I scared Cole", was all I told her.

Gayle just started laughing, as if she could imagine it. "Did you hide behind his door or something?"

What would she think of me if I told her I was under his bed? Would she be upset or would she find it humorous? I might as well find out. "I hid under his bed and kept meowing until he bent down to check, and then I screamed. The second scream came from him." Even though I was scared of her reaction, I still smiled evilly about it.

Then she did what  I hoped she would do, she laughed. "Anyway, I'm off to bed, night", and off she went up the stairs before I could reply.

I grabbed a cup, after looking through all of the cupboards, and poured myself some water from the tap. From the corner of my eye I saw Cole walking into the kitchen. I pretended I didn't see him and just proceeded to drink from the cup.

"Hey", his strong and capturing voice said.

I turned slightly, acting surprised. "Oh, hey."

Awkward silence.

"You do know you directed me to the wrong room, right?" I asked, trying to break the silence and hoping at the same time that I hadn't heard him wrong.

"I know", and then he winked.

"Wow", I scoffed.

He looked down and just brushed his right hand through his dark brown- almost black- hair. "So what's your name?" he asked, looking back up.

He's going to find out, so I better just tell him anyway. "Kenzie."

"Is that a nickname or your full first name?" No one had asked me that question in years.

"Nickname. My full name is McKenzie. My mom was set on naming me something different to all the other kids." Thinking of my mom made me sick. I think Cole picked up that it was a touch subject, or maybe he just wasn't interested, 'cause he changed the topic.

"So, you're new here?" he asked.

"Yeah", I finished off my water and put my cup in the sink. "I should probably go, the girls are probably wondering why I'm taking so long. And sorry about earlier, it was just a prank I was kinda forced to do."

He nodded, and off I went up the stairs.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I got home later the next afternoon, around 5 o'clock. I had a bruise on my arm, so naturally my dad asked how I got it. "We were laughing at something and I laughed so hard that I fell off the bed onto a phone charger", was the excuse I gave. I just didn't want my dad to know how clumsy I was being, it reminded him of my mom. The truth was that when Tayla went to the bathroom I decided that I would scare her when she came back. I stood on Lauren's bed, which was against the wall, and waited until she was done. I heard the toilet flush and prepared myself to jump on her, but she never came. I peaked outside the door to see that she was going downstairs. I jumped off the bed, thinking that I could still scare her, while my feet got tangled in the duvet. I tried to stop myself, but still landed on my knees with my hands pushed against the door. I stood upright, still determined to scare her, and ran out the room. On my way to her, I slipped on a carpet in my haste, and tumbled into her. She fell frontwards while I landed half on top of her, while hitting my arm into a step. At least she got a fright, right? So yeah. that was a pretty painful experience, from which I was awarded a bruise on my arm and carpet burn on my knees.

As soon as I got home, I plonked myself down on the couch and started playing games on my phone. I put the TV on, just so that the house wasn't dead quiet.

*Beep* *Beep*

I went out of my game and into my whatsapp to check the message I had just received. It was from a number I didn't recognize.

Unknown: Hey.

Me: Hi... Sorry, but who's this?

Unknown: Cole.

Me: Oh.

I really didn't know what else to say. I decided to save his number, for just in case. Just in case I was bored and had no one to talk to, or if I was lonely or for whatever other reason.

Cole: Don't sound so excited, jeez. Keep it in your pants, Kenzie.

I didn't want to answer back, whatever I said back would just sound like I was being defensive. So I went for a simple conversational ender, hoping he would get to the point.

Me: K.

Cole immediately replied.

Cole: Wow, someone either doesn't want to talk to me or doesn't know how to keep a conversation going.

Oh, shit. He was actually trying to have a conversation with me. I thought he just needed to ask me something or mock me. I should probably apologise.

Me: I'm sorry, I didn't know why you wanted to talk to me.

: Why do you want to talk to me?

Cole: Why not?

Me: I can think of a couple of reasons. I'm new so you don't know me, I'm no one special, I'm your sisters friend, and from what I've seen and heard.... I'm not the kind of person you would usually talk to unless you needed something. Correct me if I'm wrong.

BAM, in his face!

I got up off of the couch to go to the bathroom, by the time I got back I saw that he hadn't replied, typical. I sighed and put my phone on the coffee table in front of me. As soon as I got comfortable on the couch again, my phone beebed. Dammit. Really now? I just got comfortable! With as little movement and effort as possible, I pulled my phone closer to me and grabbed it. Cole decided to reply.

Cole: Firstly, I'm trying to get to know you because you seem nice and you weren't scared and chicken enough to go into my room and try and scare me. Secondly, you are special, you're beautiful. Thirdly, you being my sisters friend doesn't mean jack. And lastly, because you're different is why I'm actually trying here.

I was stunned, I was not expecting that. I felt like a total idiot. He was trying to be nice, but I kept pushing him away. How was I suppose to reply to that? I couldn't, so I didn't.
