Curled up in a ball on the couch, laying on your side, you were very happy that no one else was home tonight. You didn't have the strength to carry on a conversation or to even straighten out the grimace marking your face. Netflix and the couch it would be.
When you heard the elevator doors open, a panic shot through you. You didn't know who was approaching but you did know that you felt like crap at this moment and you couldn't look much better than you felt.
"(Y/N)? Hey... are you feeling okay?" said a gentle voice.
"Hi, Steve," you said, trying to sound normal and sitting up a bit. "I thought you were out with the others?"
"I didn't feel like going to the bar," he said, getting closer to you and sporting a concerned look. "Are you sick?"
Now that the cat was out of the bag, you could lay back down. "Not exactly..." you said, thinking about what to tell him. Of course it wasn't a matter of telling him the truth because you would never lie to Steve ...it was more a problem of what language you would choose. "I have cramps," you said. It was just like ripping off a bandaid. There, it's done. You waited for a reaction but he didn't react oddly. Instead, he jumped into action.
"Do you need something to kill the pain?" he asked.
"Thanks but I took something already," you smiled, wearily.
"Hang tight, I'll be right back," he said, walking out of the room.
Okay... you thought. That went well. Where in the world did he go?
A few minutes later, Steve returned to your side holding out a hot water bottle for you to take and a cup of tea. "Go ahead, put it under your sweatshirt," he said as he turned away and sat down next to your feet. "Do you need anything else?"
"No... thanks, Steve. That was really nice," you said.
He turned back to you and reached over to feel your forehead. "You're a little warm," he sighed and brushed your hair away from your face.
"I don't usually get this bad," you said, trying to sit up next to him. "It's nice to have you as company though."
Steve reached his arm out for you to snuggle against his side. Even through a button down shirt and jeans, you could feel his warmth and it was heavenly.
"You take such good care of us," you said with a happy sigh of relief. Of course by "us" you meant the team because you assumed he would do this for any one of you.
"Feeling a little better?" he asked.
You nodded and sunk into him a little more.
"I have to tell you, I'd rather be here with you right now..." he said.
"Even with cramps?" you laughed.
"You bet." He sounded very sure of himself. "I have to confess that I didn't really want to go out tonight without you."
"Oh?" you looked up at him.
"That's why I came back, I wanted to see what you were up to." He saw the look on your face and seemed to realize quickly that you weren't upset by this confession. "I was a little afraid you might be on a date..."
You laughed out loud but not at Steve. "That's funny Steve... it's funny 'cause it's never true. I don't ever go on dates."
"You mean you always say no?" he asked.
"Aww, Steve... no... I mean, I never get asked out," you said sweetly. You patted his leg and smiled at him.
"Now you're pulling my leg," he said. He looked to your face and saw you shake your head no. "No... you're not serious?" He felt a little embarrassed and redirected himself. "I mean, I'm just really surprised. You're so smart and stunning - and you're really funny, too."
"You're going to make me blush," you said, looking away just a little. "My mom always tells me one day I'll find the right guy."
"I hope so," he said... and it was at that moment you realized you were hoping he was interested in you. But that wasn't looking like a prospect now.
You looked at the tv and tried not to have a reaction on your face but his arm was still around you. Maybe he feels like a big brother to me...
He looked at the tv, also. "Well, would you give me a shot?" He now turned to see your face.
You turned towards him in surprise. "Of course... can I get a rain check though?"
"Definitely. I'd like to take you out to dinner if that's alright," he said. Now you could tell that maybe he'd been going through this in his head for a while and it seemed incredibly thoughtful.
You burrowed into him more and grinned, "I'd love to go to dinner with you."
"I don't know why it took me so long to ask you," he laughed and wrapped his arms around you.
Your confidence was feeling elevated at the moment and Steve was one of your favorite people to laugh with. "What's this shirt made out of?" you asked as you ran the fabric of his sleeve between your fingers. He looked at you and he didn't have an answer for the odd question.
"...Because it looks like it's made out of husband material," you laughed so hard, you doubled over. You were thankful to see that Steve also thought it was funny.
It's funny 'cause it's true.
Best. Night. With. Cramps. Ever.
