Chapter 41 - White wine & frozen peas

Start from the beginning

Jace was at my side in a second, wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing kisses into my hair, while I clenched onto his thick white sweater and breathed loudly. The sound of cabs and people walking down in the streets was what finally made me regain my footing to move inside.

We collapsed onto the worn leather couch, my legs in Louis' lap and my head in Jace's. "It's like," I sniffled, "I want to burn the fucking jacket, but it's also really nice and pretty and Harry looked good in it."

Jace ran his hands through my hair. "It was a very nice jacket. Coffee?"

"Yes, please." Louis disappeared from the couch and headed to the kitchen. The sound of coffee grinding filled the otherwise silent apartment as we sat. He reappeared a few minutes later with three steaming mugs and handed me one.

I took a small sip and stared at the wall, and the two boys stared at me. They looked at me like I was going to crack at any second, or maybe break down into tears again. After less than a minute I gave up trying to ignore the two pairs of wary blue eyes.

"What do you think I'm going to do? Cry? No, I'm not. I'm not going to," I huffed.

Louis peeked at me over the rim of his coffee cup with curious blue eyes. "Why not?"

"Because Harry Styles doesn't even deserve me to cry for him. And we didn't even, like, break up. This isn't a break up," I informed them. They both stared back at me blankly. "We weren't together. This isn't technically a break up. So don't act like it is."

The two boys nodded slowly and exchanged looks that made me want to punch them in the face, but then I realised that anger was a little bit misdirected and I actually wanted to punch Harry in the face. I downed the rest of my coffee with a frustrated groan.

"Where's my phone?" I snapped.

Jace flinched away from me awkwardly. "Uh, are you sure that's a good idea?"

"Yes. He probably hasn't called me. He didn't even seem to care, so why would he bother?"

The two boys looked uncomfortable under my cool gaze, so with another frustrated noise, I slammed my mug down on the table and stood up. Neither one said anything when I stomped out of the living room back to my room to find my phone.

I searched the bed thoroughly, tugging off the sheets and pillows, until I came to the conclusion that it wasn't there. After that, I went through the pockets of all the clothes I had been wearing last night, then through my purse, before the realisation dawned on me.

I stormed back into the living room with a frustrated scream, "Harry Styles has my phone. He just insisted on holding it last night."

Louis blanched. "Well, that's very awkward."

"Yeah, Lou, just a little," I hissed. "I need my phone."

"I'll go get it," Jace cut in. "And possibly punch him in the face while I'm there, because you know, I've gotta be all protective and all that."

"Just -- no. Give me your phone and I'll call him."

Jace squeaked and ducked into Louis' side. "Absolutely not. You should not be calling him. It's only been one day since you broke up."

"We didn't break up! Give me your phone, now." I snarled.

He only flinched further into Louis, as if Louis provided the best protection in the entire world. I held out my hand and waited for him to place it in my palm. After thirty seconds of staring, I squealed in frustration and tackled my roommate into the couch.
