Chapter Twenty-Four

Brynna was woken from her deep sleep by the shrill ringing of her phone that was still in her back pocket. Pulling it out, but not moving from her position laying almost face down on the couch she answered with a groggy hello.

“Did I wake you up? I’m sorry, it’s nearly eleven, I thought you’d be up by now.” She heard Parker say on the other end.

“I was tired,” was all she offered.

“Sounds like it. Look, I’m really sorry about Loren last night. Dora told me about it when I got back from the bathroom, but by then you were gone.”

“No worries, Dora already apologized anyway.”

“Well, since we didn’t get to hang out after your shift yesterday, what are you doing tonight?”

Brynna sat up and yawned, noting there was noise coming from the kitchen. Del must be home. “Nothing… that I know of. Why?”

“I’m coming over- at six. We’re going to have this date. Just don’t leave your house at all, that way you can’t run away and nothing can happen.”

“But-“

“I’ll see you at six.”

“Parker!” Brynna laughed, and then realized how quiet it was on the other side. “Hello?” He hung up on her. Shaking her head, she decided she should probably get up to shower and get ready for the day.

Not knowing what was planned for this date, Brynna settled on wearing a simple light green summer dress that reached just above her knees. Del had left earlier saying he’d be back late so Brynna filled her day with meaningless house chores until it was almost six and there came a knock at the door.

Thinking it was Parker; she opened the door with a wide smile that quickly deflated when she saw who it really was. “What are you doing here?”

“I need to talk to you.” Brynna shook her head at her ex-boyfriend and tried to shut the door but his food blocked it. “It took forever to find you, so please don’t shut the door in my face.”

“And how did you end up finding me?” She asked, letting the door fall open again. It was no use fighting him. She moved out of the doorway and allowed him to come in instead.

“Sheila finally told me where you were living now. I told her it was urgent.” Sheila has a soft spot for Nick anyway, so it didn’t surprise her.

“Well, what do you want then?”

“We need to talk about what you said at the party; about you being pregnant.”

“You brought me all the way across the country and then you left me there after stealing my cash. Why should I be talking to you at all right now?”

“Look, I’m sorry; is that what you want to hear?”

Brynna rolled her eyes at him. “Maybe if it was a real apology. What is it you want to know?”

Nick huffed. “How do you even know it was mine? We both slept around pretty much our whole relationship so why accuse me?”

Brynna’s eyes narrowed and she tensed, ready to throw him out now. “I was only with you then, so you’re the only possibility. It doesn’t matter though, it didn’t make it.”

“What exactly happened?”

Brynna sat down then and explained what happened leading up to her passing out while she was singing with Ian at the band’s sound check. For as much as a jerk as he was Nick really valued family and adored kids. When Brynna told him what the doctor had explained to her and that the pills he had wanted her to take had a big part of her miscarriage that seemed to be what really hit him.
