"Please, tell me what you feel about me," Clara pleaded. Her palms against mine felt warm and God, she was trembling. She looked up at me sincerely. Our gazes locked. She was waiting for my answer. I didn't know what to say, but I also didn't want to hurt her.
She bit her lip, "It's okay. Don't answer." she murmured. "I seriously don't know what's gotten into me."
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I really do."
"Don't say sorry," she snapped. "You're only making it worse," she mumbled.
"Then don't cry. We can talk about this later, okay?
She chuckled between sobs then she nodded.
"Come here." I pulled her towards me then wrapped my arms around her. I kept my other hand firmly on the back of her head, while I slide down my other hand, rubbing circles on her back.
"I'm in love with you, Rafe," she whispered sorely.
I frowned, "What?"
"I can't stay with you because I fell in love with you."
I gulped hard. I slightly pulled her to get a glimpse of her face but she looked away.
"W-what did you say?" I didn't know anymore. I knew I heard it right. I didn't expect her to say those words. Why would she love someone like me? I was just a guy who enjoyed screwing a woman and she knows it.
"I am quitting because I cannot stay anymore with you. Isn't it a part of your fraternization policy? I can't fall in love with someone in the company."
I frowned hard, "Clara..."
"I cannot tell you directly because nothing will ever change if I tell you and besides, you are my boss. You are paying me to work for you and—"
"Clara, what are you saying?"
She was about to say something when a knock on the door interrupted us.
He frowned, "Rafe?" It was Jared, damn it. I awkwardly released Clara from my arms.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Am I interrupting something?" he asked.
"Nothing, what is it?"
"We have to cancel the meeting. Your uncle is in the hospital." Jared said.
"What happened?" I asked, a little surprised. He was fine when I talked to him on the phone yesterday. "I can't stop the meeting just because my uncle is in the hospital."
"Cool down, man. You can't start the meeting if there's no one attending. Half of the board went to the hospital. Your uncle is critical. He collapsed this morning. Even your father left to look for him."
"God!" Clara gasped, she caught her mouth. "Is he alright?"
Jared grimaced, "I'm not sure."
"Where are the other members?"
"Oh, I sent them home," Jared responded.
"I have to visit him then," I rested my hands on my waist. He may have had an unnecessary propaganda but he was still my uncle.
"I'll be going first," Jared said.
"You are going on a date?" I arched an eyebrow. "At a time like this?"
"Yeah, her name's Jessie. I'll leave so you can continue your romantic moment with your—uh—assistant," he teased.
I chuckled, "A-hole, get lost!"
Rafael sent his best friend out of the room. I began to wonder what would happen to us now that Director Sloan was in the hospital. He won't be back until he recovered. The situation itself was making me stay. God, this is not happening.
"Clara?" Rafe came back a few minutes later.
"Rafe, what are you planning to do now?"
"God, Clara. I wish I could let go of this, but I can't. How can I ever let you go now that I know the reason why you can't be with me?" he sighed.
"You see... This is why—"
"Hold on," he cut in. "I really think I should not let you go now that I have a reason why I should marry you."
I gaped at him. How did he come up to such idea? Was he really serious? "Look, you don't even have feelings for me."
"Yes, I am not even sure what I feel about you, but I want to keep you."
Rafe walked closer then he gently caresses my neck with his palm. God knows how much I wanted this man so much. I wanted this man for a long time, but I didn't want to stay with someone who would treat everything like a business. I wasn't a business. I was a human with feelings. I always dreamed that my marriage would be because for love.
"I am really scared. You should not do that just because you wanted me to stay."
"I am scared of myself too. I never thought of marriage or I was capable of marrying someone. This is new for me too. I guess we just have to trust each other then we could try..."
I shook my head, "Marriage I is too much Rafe. I don't want you to regret it in the future."
"Then what should I do, Clara? I want you to stay," he said softly.
God, it sounded so real, I almost wanted to believe that it was all true—that Rafe could have feelings for me. But it wasn't a part of the plan. My plan was to leave the company, forget about him and move on to a new life; a new life away from him. I didn't understand him at all, but I needed him and I was very tempted to try what he was offering...
