I was woken up by someone shaking me. "Stay away from me," I said out loud. "I didn't mean to get her killed!" I shot up with my eyes wide open. "Just a dream, just a dream, a dream that's true..." I said to myself, forgetting that Zach was in the car with me.
"Sleeping beauty, you okay?" Zach said.
I looked over at him before speaking. "Yeah, I'm fine, sorry," I said quietly. He nodded and we both got out of his car.
We headed into the motel. "Welcome to the Stormy Brook motel, how may I help you?" She asked looked at Zach directly, ignoring me. For some reason that bothered me, the way she looked at him.
"Yes, you can," I said to her. She turned to look at me.
"Ah, little Miss. Lena Mercer, finally back in town I see. As if you being here in the first place was any better." She said smirking at me.
"Yeah I am, Brooke," I told her and said her name with disgust. I've always hated Brooke. Zach looked between the two of us. We were glaring at one another.
"Okay, um so Brooke, can we get a room please?" He asked, trying to change the subject.
"Sure thing hot stuff." She said and gave him a key. She also gave him a piece of paper with her number on it.
"Thanks," He said before grabbing my hand, intentional or not I wasn't sure, and we walked to the room.
He looked over and smirked at me. "W-What?" I asked scared.
"You look so pissed off to see her." He said.
I rolled my eyes. "So, I've never liked her, not when I lived here and not now when I've moved away," I explained to him. Then it was Zach's turn to roll his eyes.
"Well, to me you sounded jealous." He said.
"I was not!"
"Just keep telling yourself that Cinderella."
We opened our room and it was a simple room with a small kitchen a coach and a tv. It had a dresser and a door leading to a bathroom. There was also a small opening leading to a bedroom. I walked into the bedroom to fall onto the bed to go to sleep considering it's around 10 pm, but I was tired.
What I found instead of 2 single beds is one double bed. "Okay, well I'm sleeping on the couch," I said and started to head that way, but Zach brought me back.
"No, you can have the bed, trust me, sleeping on the couch isn't something you want to do." He said.
"But you want to sleep on the couch?" I said to him.
"It's not like I haven't slept on a couch before." He said and rolled his eyes.
"Okay instead of arguing how about we just both share the bed," I said trying to come up with a compromise.
The only time I had shared a bed with a boy was when Mack wanted to "punish me" the only way he knew how to. "So, you'd share a bed with me, knowing I could do anything I wanted to you. Not a good way to protect your innocence, Cinderella." He said.
If only he knew I was anything but innocent.
"Well, you're not going to do anything because I'm going to stay on one side and you're going to stay on the other side," I said crossing my arms. He didn't get to say a word before I claimed the right side of the bed, closest to the window.
I slide off my shoes and get under the sheets. I curled myself into a ball, wanting to protect myself at all cost. I didn't know what could happen. I felt the bed dip down when Zach got on the left side. I didn't know if I could go back to sleep to dream that same dream, over and over again.
I starred out the window, thinking, trying to keep my brain active so I couldn't fall asleep. I didn't want to fall asleep, I didn't want to have that dream again. "Sleeping beauty I know you're still awake." I heard Zach say.
"So are you." I pointed out.
He chuckled before I turned to face him, to find out he was facing me as well. "Well, how am I supposed to know if you're going to have one of your nightmares again, that's the reason you don't want to go to sleep. You're afraid of your nightmares." He said out loud like I was an open book.
I sat up on the bed. "Well, how would you like it if every time you go to sleep, you feel and see pain. You see someone you cared about die, over and over again. The person who—never mind." I said.
This time Zach sat up and looked at me. "Lena," He said using my name again.
"What?" I asked confused.
"There is nothing to be afraid of, I mean I'm here, who would dare go against me?" He said which caused me a to laugh a little.
"We aren't in West Fields anymore, Zach," I said.
"Well, Dorothy, don't you think I know we aren't in West Fields anymore." He said. "Just go to sleep, Sleeping Beauty. I'll be here to fight whatever comes your way." He said. I smiled at that. Maybe he isn't so bad after all. I lay back down, but this time I'm curled up into Zach's side.
The next morning I woke up with Zach's arm draped over me. This is the second time I haven't had that dream while I sleep, both times Zach has been with me.
I try not to think about it too much. I slowly got up out of the bed and headed to the kitchen. I made Zach and me some coffee and as I began to drink mine Zach appears in the kitchen. "Looks like Sleeping Beauty is awake early." He said to me, taking the coffee from my hands that I made for him.
"I'm used to get up early." I simply said.
Once we were done with our coffees we put them in the sink. "Have you told your grandparents you're coming?" He asked as we headed out of the motel room.
"No, and I just realized we never bought any new clothes with us either," I said.
We got into his car. "Well, Dorothy, why don't you just tap those magical shoes of yours and make us appear in a clothing store!" He said.
I rolled my eyes. "If only that were possible," I told him. "The nearest clothing store is halfway across town and my grandparent's house is about 5 minutes away from here, I think we'll make it."
He smiled a bit at my statement. Soon enough, well 5 minutes later, we had pulled into my grandparents' driveway. I got out of the car and headed up to my grandparent's house. I rang the doorbell and then my grandmother, Lily opened the door.
"Lena! It's so wonderful to see you, but why are you here, and who is your boyfriend?" She said looking at Zach who had just come up behind me.
"Hey, grandma. It's good to see you too! I'm here because I wanted to visit you. I missed you." I told her.
"Where is Mack?" She asked looking around.
"He is at home with—dad," I said forcing the word dad out of my mouth.
"This is--" I'm cut off by Zach.
"I'm Zach, ma'am." He tells her. "You can call me Lily, Zach. Why didn't you tell me you had a boyfriend Lena?" she asked turning and looking at me.
"He is not my--" but Zach cut me off again.
"Well, you see, Cinderella over here wanted to surprise you guys." He said.
I glared at him before I slapped his arm. "Well, baby girl, you know how I love surprises, but your grandpa is gonna want to meet him," Grandma said.
I sighed. I guess there is nothing left to do but pretend. "Yeah, like he always does when I bring a boy over here," I said.
"You know he is only looking out for you, don't you remember your last boyfriend and how he turned out." She told me.
"Yeah, I know grandma," I rushed out. Zach looked at me confused. I just shook my head and we all went into the house.
I whispered to Zach. "You better know what you're doing. My grandpa isn't an easy man to be impressed by someone."
He turned to me. "I'd like to see him try to not be impressed by me." I rolled my eyes.
"Fine, it's your death wish."
