Larissa, still lost in her strange dreams, sleeps in late... but after lunch she will be back in class and causing trouble.
Meanwhile, across the park, Laura (whom Larissa doesn't even know yet) wakes up on time and is out the door early...
It's a cold winter's day, so she puts on a coat that is warm with lining. But it isn't what she wants to wear at all...
In her backpack is a special dress that she will change into once she's safely at school.
That's because mom doesn't want her to wear all black all the time, so Laura has to sneak around, even from her sister and stepdad and other members of her family.
Laura doesn't talk much and has many secrets.
Her grandmother sent her a letter recently that read:
Laura is 16 years old. She doesn't really have any friends who'd understand what she thinks about, but that's OK for now.
Wanting to be left alone seems to come naturally to her.
She walks through the vacant streets of Greenhaven now, not seeing the things in the dark sky behind her... but they see her and begin to follow behind.
