"When you play it hard, and I try to follow you there.
It's not about control but I turn back when I see where you go.
"Are you going to age with grace?
Are you going to leave a path to trace?
"But oblivion is calling out your name,
You always take it further than I ever can.
"When oh oblivion is calling out your name,
You always take it further than I ever can."
"Great job, Clara!" Sophia applauds me. "That sounded incredible!"
"Album-worthy?" I ask her, knowing it's not.
"Almost," Sophia bites her lip. "We'll keep working on it."
I'm so tired. Ever since I started working on my first album a week ago, it's been nonstop work. I stifle a yawn and rub my eyes.
"But for today, I think that's enough work," Harry says, walking into the room. "You've barely gotten any sleep for the past week, love. Come home with me."
"No buts, Clara. You're exhausted," Harry shakes his head.
"I am not," I lie.
"Of course you are. You're eyes are red, love. I know the feeling, believe me," he laughs. "Come on. You can work more tomorrow."
"No I can't, I promised John that I would visit with him tomorrow," I argue.
"We'll talk about that later, Clara. For now, Iet's go home," Harry suggests. I'm suddenly suspicious.
"Talk about what, Harry?" I ask him.
"Clara, I promise I'll explain when we get home, okay?" Harry pleads.
"Fine," I groan. "Let's go. Thank you so much, Sophia."
"No problem, Clara. I'm so glad that we could get so much done today," Sophia smiles. She doesn't seem at all irritated by my sudden decision to leave. I smile back and follow Harry to the car. We turn on the radio and listen to music in silence until we reach the flat. Harry parks the car and gets out, slamming the door behind him and walking to the door without looking back. I jog after him.
"Harry, what's going on?" I ask. "Stop. Harry, stop!" I call after him as he unlocks the door and walks inside. He stops in his tracks but doesn't turn to face me. I walk up behind him and manually turn him around to look at his face. He's crying. "Harry, whatever it is, please tell me."
"John, he--he's in the hospital. He has pancreatic cancer. The cancer's already metastasized. Clara, I'm so sorry," Harry whispers.
"Don't," I whisper. "Just don't."
I turn away from him and run upstairs to the bathroom.
"Clara, you can't just shut me out. Please don't shut me out," Harry begs as I fish around for my razor. "Please, I need you to trust me. I need you to let me help you."
