T W E N T Y - O N E
"The second best V and D you could ask for? Vote for Venia Addams and Dylan Parker for your prom queen and king?"
All of that was read - rather questioningly - by me as Ramona and Collin walked me to see my poster on the way to third period. I blushed as I turned to look the two of them in the face. "Who in the world authorized this? No, who even came up with it?"
And at that question, the two of them went red in the face. Luckily for Ramona, Cameron Coolidge came up behind her, smoothly wrapping an arm over her shoulder before nodding in acknowledgment to Collin and I. "Come on, babe, we have to get to class."
Just like that, they left together, leaving me alone with a just as lonely Collin. I sighed, letting my head hang low. "I wish I had a boyfriend right now," I said. Of course, I didn't have one because I had unintentionally snubbed Beckett to not waste my one chance to be with Dylan, and then I had kissed - and slept with - Dylan, but neither of us really asked about cementing our status. I had been fine with that yesterday, but I would be fine with anything after he night I had, but now seeing Cameron and Ramona being romantic made something twinge with longing in the pit of my stomach.
"What's wrong with the single life," Collin said with humor. "Mindless sex, no angry text messages at four in the morning, no paranoia when they have a friend of the opposite gender who they spend like three hours with on the weekend while they're blowing you off and you suddenly have to drive two hours to downtown and fight some guy. It's much easier this way, Venia."
I rolled my eyes. "I mean, I feel like I have the spark with someone, but we just haven't really fanned the flames yet. At least not all the way."
And sure enough, in the hallway, Dylan was chumming it up with his lacrosse buddies. And sure enough, one of those included Beckett. They were all in a big group talking about something as one of the guys I didn't recognize was taking something out of his locker. I sighed.
"Let me guess," Collin said, "you and Beckett are on the outs right now?"
He wasn't exactly right, but I mean, he wasn't wrong about that. I wasn't entirely sure if I could call Beckett my ex-boyfriend or not, but he was definitely my first time being dumped, even if it felt a bit freeing at the time. I was about to answer him, but it was my turn to be interrupted this time by Spencer Evans and Prosperina Valdez. In other words, just another couple here to rub some salt in the wound.
"Hey there, Collin and Venia," Prosperina said while her boyfriend slapped an affectionate hand on both of our shoulders.
"Hey guys," I said, politely welcoming their presence, even if they were killing me softly just by being here together. "What's up with you two?"
"Oh, you know," Spencer started, making me raise an eyebrow. "I just wanted to see you, Venia. You know, see how you're doing."
While Collin and I both made confused faces in response to what he said, Prosperina seemed to go along with it, trying her best not to slip and give away any details of her knowledge.
"Is this like couples' telepathy or something, because I'm single right now, so I don't know to translate it," Collin said, causing me to stifle a laugh.
"No," Propserina rolled her eyes. "What Spencer was trying to say is that we know what happened and that we wanted to see how you were feeling today."
"What do you mean -," I started, but then it fully hit me. "Oh my god, I'm going to kill him."
Spencer blushed taking a step back from me to duck himself behind his girlfriend. "Please don't kill me, I'll give you anything!"
